I was born and raised a muslim but I enjoyed the satanic verses. Salman Rushdie's other book Midnight's Children is by the way the best book I have ever read, and beleive me I have read many.
The thing with Salman Rushdie is the same as it was with the Danish Cartoons and all that. Imams just hyped up the masses, a vast majority of whom have never read the book and it fuelled all the anger. A character in the book dreams that he is a prophet and in his dreams some names and characters pop up that ressemble the ones in the early history of Islam. I think it was a good work of art. And in my opinion good writers and other artists are not there to sooth the mind but to give headaches and to provoke thought.
I may not agree with voltaire on many things but one thing he said guides me when it comes to matters of opinion
"I may not agree with what you say but I will fight to death for your right to say it."
Most muslims are very peacefull and tolerant but unfortunately its always the crazy ones who make a lot of noise, what with the anti islam media propaganda coming from all sides!!
