Default Did african culture allow divorce? - 04-23-2008, 07:50 AM

Many traditionalists are now coming together to salvage cultural values and customs from extinction, atleast document wise.

Is it true that almost all african cultures prohibited divorce?

I don think it did. I have never seen any old mzee or woman being single ati coz they got divorced. I think the way it used to go is, the man will stop having contact with the said wife, but will still support her and her kids, the ones the sired together will still inherit from him

I've also heard that the woman would ran away leaving all her kids behind.
Usually she would go back to her homeland and get remarried elsewhere, start a new family with someone else. Usually as a 2nd or 3rd wife.

I'm not sure how though

^^I think there was some form of docvorce. I'll leave it to cultural anthropologists to expound on this but I know dowry used to be returned in case of issues like barreness etc. To me that is a form of divorce...
