Record number of muslims mps in tenth parliament the tenth parliament has earned the distinction of having the highest number of muslim members of parliament in the history of the august house. Five muslim legislators were among the 12 nominated mps who along with the 28 elected muslim mps saw the number dramatically rising to 33 from the 26 mps in the ninth parliament. The raila odinga-led orange democratic movement (odm) took the lion share of the seats with six positions two of which went to muslim nominees, sheikh muhammad dor muhammad, the secretary general of the council of imams and preachers of kenya (cipk) who is also the imam of mbaruk masjid in mombasa and safia abdi noor the executive director of womankind kenya, a garissa-based non-governmental organisation. Odm-kenya on its part secured two seats, both of which went to muslim nominees muhammad affey the former kenyan ambassador to somalia and lamu politician shakila abdallah. Amina abdallah who served in the ninth parliament as a nominated kanu mp was this time again nominated for the party’s sole seat for another stint in the august house. The seat for the wajir north constituency remains vacant awaiting a rerun after the top two contestants odm’s muhammad gabbow and dr ali hussein of kanu tied with similar margins. The state opening of the parliament was conducted yesterday at a historical event which brought together odm and pnu in a historical grand coalition.
