Default Is this right or wrong? - 02-29-2008, 02:56 AM

A woman walks into her appartment and while inside the lift she sees an envelope stuffed with cash amounting to 3000 usd.The envelope had no name and address.

Her reaction
1. She assumes thats her prayers has been answered and takes the money. She has been through a financial drought, had been praying to get money, she tried borrowing but turned down severally by close friends, has two month rent arrears and being a single mother who has two kids waiting to join school next month.

2. Facing same financial scenario as above nonetheless She reports the incident to the care-taker with intensions of giving the money back.

Whats your view? What would be the right thing to do?

If A equals success, then the formula is A = X + Y+Z. X is work. Y is play. Z is keep your mouth shut.

She did the right thing. No matter how big your problems seem, there is always someone who is worse off. May whoever lost the money was worse off than her, and even if they were not, that money still did not belong to her.

Ray habari ya masiku, now am a little bit confused by your question,do you want us to argue on the most appropriate step of action btw the two reaction?
if so then i would go for no.2 - The money could be a test of faith awaiting her prayers to be answered.

if she lived in coasto or in kitui - she can take the money at her own risk
she can end up being spanked as she sleeps my majinis

if she is in a clueless region like mandera or lodwar for example - she can take the cash

Default Pressure to Compromise and an Opportunity to Do So - 03-01-2008, 01:54 PM

The dilemma of the woman in question sounds like part of chapter 17 in Virtue That Counts.

Sometimes we don't steal not because we are not thieves per se but because we lack "pressure" and/or "opportunity" to do so. Virtue that counts is where we resist the pressure and ignore the opportunity.

More concretely, in the above case, the woman shouldn't just hand over the money to the caretaker. Reason: the caretaker may help him/herself on the money. She can report to the caretaker that she has picked some amount of money. She must not disclose how much it is. She should then inform the caretaker that if someone comes to report that he/she lost some money, the person should be able to identify how much the money was and how it was packed (namely--the fact that it was in an envelope).

The woman should then wait for, say, a month (this is arbitrary). If nobody claims the money, she can then use it or give it away to charity or as an offering.

Default money - 03-01-2008, 10:33 PM

Why not option 2,may be by returning the money to its rightful owner she will get the reward she is looking for.

If she has integrity and self-righteousness then she cannot opt for the first option. Coz she could subject whoever left behind the cash to untold anguish.

I would prefer she informs the caretaker that she is in possession of a parcel. And whoever has left behind the parcel should describe what type of parcel it is and what the contents are if possible.

However if no one comes forward to claim, then she can still use the money. But taking the money for charity when she has a problem at hand would be preposterous. Remember you give to charity when you have surplus.
