Old is gold. Dig into OT and get some cool advice about lost property whose original owner is in question. Rhymes with option two. Nonetheless I follow option one most of the time, but for such a large sum of money, I wouldn't risk, who knows if it's not a set up.

If you're about to lose your apartment, you and your kids will wind up on the streets homeless, your kids need food, drugs, clothes, your car needs fixing, etc etc etc - and you find $3,000, you need to keep it. It's one thing finding $3,000 in your office ama in a friends place - coz you can quickly pinpoint who it belongs to. But if you find it when walking around a public place, I say finders-keepers, especially if you desperately need the money.

The money thing brings up interesting questions. If you desperately needed a lot of money (say, $250,000 so your dad can undergo some emergency medical procedures without which he will surely die), and Osama bin Laden (he is a multi-millionaire) offered you the money, would you take it?

@Jaramba, you don't only give when you have surplus. The Bible applauds sacrificial giving (Mark 12:41-43); (2 Corinthians 8:1-5); (1 Kings 17:10-14), etc.

@ATLian, I would only refuse money from Osama if he aquired the money through murdering people, or if it is from drugs, and the likes. Or if he is giving me money with strings attached, for example to buy my conscience. Since Osama's source of wealth is oil, I think there would be nothing wrong taking the money--but there must not be any strings attached.

Osama's money is blood money,he killed ,slaughterred and maimed and he is yet to repent his sinful deeds,i believe accepting money from such a person is complicity to his crimes.

A fervent pray of a righteous man or woman is able to heal your ailing father and get all his sins forgiven.

I think Osama's family's money is from construction (although I'm sure the family has diversified interests in oil too).

You have an interesting argument. Osama is responsible for killing the 200+ people when he had his men bomb the US embassy in Kenya. But he didn't make his money through killing people. Therefore you're OK taking the money.

But if Osama was a hitman, and he killed just 1 person and was paid for that one job, then you wouldn't take the money.

What's the difference?
