British teacher arrives at Sudan court

KHARTOUM (AFP) — A British teacher arrived at a Sudanese court on Thursday after being charged with insulting Islam and inciting religious hatred by allowing pupils to name a teddy bear Mohammed.

Mother of two, Gillian Gibbons, 54, charged on Wednesday in a case threatening to spark a major diplomatic row with Britain, arrived at the criminal court in Khartoum in a prison van.

Journalists and photographers were prevented from getting close or taking pictures as the van drove around the back of the courthouse.

The private school teacher has been in police custody for four days in Khartoum, where Islamic Sharia law is enforced.

The charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 lashes, six months in prison and a fine. Sudanese officials say a judge will determine the severity of the sentence.

British embassy officials were heading to the court, where Gibbons was expected to appear with her lawyer shortly after her arrival. Officials said they understood that her case could go straight to a trial or that the court could set a date for later proceedings.

Gibbons was arrested on Sunday after parents at the private English school where she had taught for less than a term, complained that in allowing primary school children to name a cuddly toy Mohammed, she had insulted Muslims.

As a diplomatic row brewed, British Foreign Secretary David Miliband was likely to summon the Sudanese ambassador to London for urgent talks at the Foreign Office on Thursday, a spokesman said.

Miliband wants an explanation on the decision to charge Gibbons over letting pupils call the bear Mohammed -- a popular boys' name in Muslim countries but also the same name of the prophet and founder of Islam.

The purpose of the meeting was "so we can get a clear explanation for the rationale behind the charges and a sense of what the next steps might be," a spokesman said. "We will consider our response in the light of that."

The United States, Britain's closest ally and a country that imposes economic sanctions on the Sudanese government, also voiced concern.

"We are following the situation of the British teacher closely and with concern," the US State Department said in a statement. "We understand the British government is pursuing this with the Sudanese government directly."

Although the affair has aroused rather scant attention in the Sudanese press, the independent English-language newspaper The Citizen published a stinging editorial declaring that Gibbons deserved better justice.

The education ministry, to which parents at the Unity High School complained, was staffed with "Islamic fundamentalists" and "another fanatic" was likely to hear her case in court, the newspaper wrote.

"Gibbons's crime reflects what non-Muslims living in northern Sudan go through everyday. Women caught brewing local beverages... meant for traditional occasions are detained, flogged, fined and imprisoned.

"And men found drinking alcohols are flogged publicly, a form of humiliation," said the newspaper.

The teacher, who has been visited by British consular officials and her lawyer, has said she is being treated well but that she never meant to cause offence over the bear-naming exercise in September.

The Akhbar al-Youm newspaper published a letter from Gibbons addressed to parents on school notepaper asking families to take the classroom bear called Mohammed home in order to fill out a diary entry as part of a school project.

The Committee of Ulemas in Sudan denounced Gibbons' behaviour and demanded a full investigation into who was responsible and that the education ministry do more to protect Muslim pupils.

The ministry is to conduct an inquiry into the Christian-run Unity High School to determine whether it was guilty of covering-up the incident, which happened several weeks ago.

islam has respect to its prophet muhamed (SAW). if christians are used to call even there pets jesus (astaghfirullah) then just know it is not allowed. you might say anything about the holy prophet but you really turn a blind eye and deaf ear as to what other people say about Jesus... that he slept with a prostitute...he has a son with mary of magdala... why don't you spend your time saying something useful like protecting the name of jesus whom you highly regard other than talking bull **** about some other prophets. just see how your words are doing no harm to the islamic community and you won't make a difference at all

Thousands Of British Elite Embrace Islam: Study
Islam Online- News Section

LONDON, February 26 (IslamOnline.net) – Jonathan Birt, the son of Lord Birt and Emma Clark, the granddaughter of former liberal prime minister Herbert Asquith, are only two of 14,000 mostly-elite white Britons having reverted to Islam.

In the first authoritative study of the phenomenon, carried by the Sunday Times on February 22, some of the country’s top landowners, celebrities and the offspring of senior Establishment figures have embraced the Muslim faith after being disillusioned with western values.

The new study by Yahya (formerly Jonathan) Birt, son of Lord Birt, former director-general of the BBC, provides the first reliable data on the sensitive subject of the movement of Christians into Islam.

He uses a breakdown of the latest census figures to conclude that there are now 14,200 white reverts in Britain.

Mass Conversion

Speaking publicly for the first time about his faith this weekend, Birt argued that an inspirational figure, similar to the American revert Malcolm X for Afro-Caribbeans, would first have to emerge if the next stage, a mass conversion among white Britons, were to happen.

“You need great transitional figures to translate something alien (like Islam) into the vernacular,” Birt, whose doctorate at Oxford University is on young British Muslims, was quoted by the Times.

“The image of Islam projected by political Islamic movements is not very attractive,” he said.

Initially, Birt said he had no coherent reasons for reverting, but “in the longer term I think it was the overall profundity, balance and coherence and spirituality of the Muslim way of life which convinced me,” he said.

‘All Rage’

Meanwhile, it emerged this weekend that Emma Clark, the great-granddaughter of a British prime minister has reverted.

Emma, whose ancestor, the Liberal prime minister Herbert Asquith, took Britain into the first world war, said: “We’re all the rage, I hope it’s not a passing fashion.”

Clark, who helped design an Islamic garden for the Prince of Wales at Highgrove, his Gloucestershire home, is now helping create a similar garden for a mosque in Woking, Surrey, on the site of a car park, said the British newspaper.

Furthermore, fresh evidence came this weekend that Islam has received formal acceptance at the heart of the Establishment.

The Queen has approved new arrangements to allow Muslim staff at Buckingham Palace time off to attend Friday prayers at a mosque.

A member of staff in the finance department is the first to take advantage of it, said the British paper.

‘Trophy Lists’

Others have come to Islam through love or marriage.

Kristiane Backer, a former MTV presenter became Muslim after being introduced to Islam by friends.

Drawn to Sufi mysticism, Baker said that white reverts had to overcome prejudice both from those born into Islam and from non-believers.

“In the mosque women come up and say to me, ‘You have hair showing: you must cover up completely.’ I say, ‘Mind your own hair, you’re here to think about God’ ”.

Many reverts have been inspired by the writings of Charles Le Gai Eaton, a former Foreign Office diplomat, it added.

“I have received letters from people who are put off by the wishy-washy standards of contemporary Christianity and they are looking for a religion which does not compromise too much with the modern world,” said Eaton, author of Islam and the Destiny of Man.

You see, you are actually doing know harm to the religion that God himself said he will protect No harm at all just wasting your time. go and have a mental check up you pervert.

This is a deeply unsettling little volume, because it offers scant hope that the West can live at peace with Islam unless the religion changes radically, and even less hope that that is possible. Still, the questions Islam Unveiled poses and the answers it provides are hard to dismiss, and given the urgency of the times, necessary to ask.
If Spencer is right, the West faces a primitive, violent, and fiercely chauvinistic religion whose followers, to the extent that they are pious adherents to its teachings, cannot be reasoned with, only resisted. Islam is at its core inimical to democracy and human rights as we in the West understand them. To expect Muslims to drop their belligerence toward the West, which has existed since Islam's founding in the 7th century, is to expect them to jettison core values of their faith - something for which there is no precedent in Islamic history.

The Koran, writes Spencer, is more central to the Islamic faith than the Bible is to Christianity. Muslims believe it was revealed directly from God to the Prophet Muhammad. He will find there many divine instructions to make constant war on the infidel, who is only to be given the choice of conversion, slave-like subjugation (in historian Bat Yeor's word, dhimmitude) - or death. And throughout Islamic history, that's exactly how Muslim societies have behaved toward non-Muslims, who are by the very fact of their unbelief not considered innocents in the eternal, divinely mandated conflict.

Undeniably, Christians have in the past committed many despicable acts in the name of God, but they did so in violation of scriptural teaching, not in fulfillment of it, as in Islam.

This literalism has profound consequences for the way Muslims live. Unlike in Christianity, there is no scriptural mandate for separation of church and state in Islam, making secular democracy an alien and hostile concept. Women have few rights over and against their husbands, who may legally beat them, and men in general.

Enslaving infidels and raping infidel women are justified under Koranic law (and still occur in some Muslim lands).

Spencer does not believe that Islam can be tamed. While Muslims in the West live in peace, prosperity and religious liberty, Christians and other non-Muslims are persecuted, sometimes unto death, throughout the Muslim world today.

Because Islam demands death for heretics, moderate Muslims will always risk their lives by offering more liberal interpretations of their faith.

And most crucially, in his view, Islam cannot be other than a religion of violence. "Of course, most Muslims will never be terrorists. The problem is that ... Islam's violent elements are rooted in its central texts," Spencer writes. His final verdict on Islam is sobering, particularly when one considers the rapidly increasing Islamic presence in Europe.

Is Islam Unveiled pessimism, or realism? We can only know for sure if we have a serious public discussion of the issues Spencer raises in this important (but unsatisfyingly brief) book
Spencer may be wrong - until we hear from this supposed vast silent majority of peace-loving Muslims, the answers Spencer gives go a long way to explain the hatred, violence, backwardness, and fanaticism endemic to the Islamic world.

Once again we find an author with guts to tackle a controversial topic. The difficulty with criticising Islam is that it's believers maintain that it is 'perfect' that the Koran is the unaltered word of their god. So, to criticise their beliefs, you are criticising their god.
However, this author tackles issues that need to be confronted, and he does so logcially. One negative reviewer stated that he does not put polygamy into historical context. This kind of relativism, that one person doing bad should be accepted because other people have done bad, simply does not work.

You either accept that these things are bad, or you don't. Muslims don't, end of discussion. If you believe polygamy (that is, only a man marrying many women - why not a woman marrying many men), is equable, then you will have difficulty with this book's arguments. If, however, you believe that men shouldn't sleep with underage girls (as Muhammed did), or that women should be treated equally (Islamic courts say that a woman's testimony is worth half that of a man), then this book will be one you will want to read.

This book explores these issues so that non-believers can find out what exactly Islam stands for. Many Muslims will say that Islam gives rights to women. Yes, it does, but these are so limited it's almost not worth mentioning. A case in point; property rights. This author points out that they still are entitled to half as much as men!

Islam stands for peace! Yes, this too is true. Peace amongst Muslim men. Whilst they state "There is no compulsion in religion" that is only again, part of the story. The author shows that there are numerous Koranic injunctions to kill or war against non-believers. (Whether they mean all non-Muslims, or 'pagans' can be seen by the fact that Muslims themselves live out the injunction by waging war against ALL non-Muslims).

Muhammed divides the world up, that area already under Muslim domination, and those areas that aren't but soon will be.

The issue of the Crusades is also smartly dealt with by the author. For too long Westerners have had to apologise for these misadventures. If you want to be relativist, if that is your bent, then consider that
a) they happened 1000 years ago - Muslim agression is still happening.
b) they were a reaction against Muslim agression - no Muslim has ever apologised for waging war against Christendom (remember all that is now part of Turkey, northern Africa, much of the Middle East, was once Christian!)
c) they were not actions based upon the teachings of Jesus - Jihad is taught by Muhammed, who actually lead armies into battle, and massacred PoWs.

There are numerous anti-Christian books also available on amazon, but are their authors in fear of their lives? How many authors has your local church condemned to death?

In the past 200 years, how many busses have Christian fundamentalists blown up as suicide bombers?

I would highly recommend this book to anyone who seeks to look at Islam without the biased of one who just accepts its tennets without logic, or question.

islam is sh1t and always has been,I do not like arabs and I have never liked arabs period.
Christianity is for white people but when I compare christianity and islam, Islam is worse than devil worship.
A religion that allows human beings to be killed coz of their stupid beliefs is worse than devil worship.
