I always wonder why people who don't believe in something spend so much time in a forum for people who do.
I don't believe in Buddhism, and I don't spend my days trying to convince Buddhists that they are wrong in their beliefs.
I actually didn't find this funny, even the blasphmey aside.
As for the 10 commandments, Jesus already summarized them into 2: Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul and mind,
As for prayer, I heard someone the other day say that a lot of people pray for things God said he wouldn't do. The example was a dad walking on the beach with his son, and he saw a dead seal, and he said asked his dad what happened. The dad told the son that God needed a seal with him in heaven.????????????? God never revealed himself in this way.
As for praying for other things, there is a certain level of maturity required in prayer. God reveals himself and says I have a plan, this is my will, this was my plan, man you have free will and that's why you screw things up, and everyone shall die.
"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. And if we know that he hears us--whatever we ask--we know that we have what we asked of him."1 John 5:14,15
So people complain, I prayed to God to cure my mom's cancer....sorry, everyone's gotta go sometime somehow, and it was her time.
I pray to pass my exam...God never claimed he'd ever hand something on a silver platter, we get as much as we put into it.
Other people have a non existent relationship with God, then show up and ask for things. God offers us direction, and if you never listen to him, how do you expect him to create miracles through you in this day and age where we have no voices from the sky an burning bushes?
"This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us."1 "For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his ears are attentive to their prayer..."1 John 5:14
1 Peter 3:12
"Surely the arm of the Lord is not too short to save, nor his ear too dull to hear. But your iniquities have separated you from your God. Your sins have hidden his face from you, so that he will not hear." Isaiah 59:1,2
Lastly, God asks us to trust him. Lots of people ask for things, and they are skeptical. They lack trust.
heheh. truthfully, that was funny but also insightful. there's nothing like humour to help put things into perspective.
is carlin being blasphemous? maybe, maybe not. i mean, it does seem that we believers often recreate god in our own image so that he conveniently ends up serving our personal interests.
but then again, that's not all that religion is about. there's much more to religion than controlling people or teaching them to fear. most critiques of religion emphasize these 2 points, but ignore everything else about religion. so the critiques end up being one-dimensional as well.
is religion a man-made phenomenon? only god knows. :)
how do you explain religion's prevalence globally? almost seems like humans NEED to believe in something. are we genetically programmed to believe?
It is like your brain wave dies when it comes to religion. The same vigor and passion you question other peoples action in other forums dies when presented with the bible. You just take it as it is-no questions asked. Let me jump on the pulpit for a minute and be your favorite pastor. Hey, stop rolling your eyes.
>>I don't believe in Buddhism, and I don't spend my days trying to convince Buddhists that they are wrong in their beliefs.<<
This is a public forum; I joined it after Christians spewed so much garbage in the name of religion. So everybody has a choice to be heard and not only Christians.
>>I actually didn't find this funny, even the blasphmey aside.

And you find Mind on Mencia funny regardless or his tasteless jokes about religion. Why the double standards?
So people complain, I prayed to God to cure my mom's cancer....sorry, everyone's gotta go sometime somehow, and it was her time.
And thats the mind of a true believer. Maybe you are right, everybody have to go sometime but it is the method of choice. Why does God have to make someone suffer in pain and anguish especially a true believer? Answer that.
>>Lastly, God asks us to trust him. Lots of people ask for things, and they are skeptical. They lack trust.<<
You just exhibited lack of trust and faith by not believing in prayers as solution for cure for the sick and dying.
And on what grounds are you qualified to give advice to the righteous, since you live a life of fornication. I think God is clear when he says
Brothers, even if a person is caught in some transgression, you who are spiritual should correct that one in a gentle spirit, looking to yourself, so that you also may not be tempted. (Gal 6:1)
Since you are weak and live a life of sin, you are disqualified.
And now to the big discussion about free will
Jesus said, "Your Father (God) knows how many hairs there are on your head!" (Matthew 10:30)
This then is how we know that we belong to the truth, and how we set our hearts at rest in his presence.whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything. John 3:19-20
God has foreknowledge of all events that take place within the realm of free will, He still has to let those events transpire. The fact that they do transpire is how He has foreknowledge of them. And there would be no actual free will if God didn't allow those events and choices to take place.
Why is it hard for Christians to see that?
