TeeJay,
are you in the States? If so, just grab it at any Barnes and Noble, ama Borders bookstore.
I read a heck of a lot, and I read all kinds of stuff, but I must say "Satanic Verses" is about the hardest book I've ever tried to read. It's just damn confusing, it's written like it's a fantasy world sort of thing, nothing makes sense, etc. I couldn't finish reading it despite really trying.
If all you want is the controversial part, I'll give it to you. Islam believes in the worship of one god, and that the Koran is the correct unchangeable word of god as dictated to Mohammed by Allah and the angels. So one day Angel Gabriel came to unleash his usual dictation, and he told Mohammed that it was OK to worship some certain goddess, and Mohammed put these verses in the Koran. Of course this came to be in direct contradiction the monotheistic nature of Islam, and it put the powers that be in a quandry since the Koran is perfect and unchangeable hence the verses just couldn't be removed. So just like the Catholics did with the Bible, these powers came up with a re-mix - namely that on that day, Angel Gabriel was actually Satan in disguise, meaning that all the verses he dictated to Mohammed (now called the Satanic Verses) could be purged from the Koran bila compromising it's perfect nature.
This was actually meant to have happened, but of course Muslims now thoroughly deny this. It's not even what the book is about, it was just something that happened in the book. You can try read the book, but I guarantee you it will be one hell of a tough read.
