Before Joseph was informed that Mary 'was with child through the Holy Spirit', the Bible records that he- Joseph her husband -was a righteous man and did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorce her quietly.

My point, a righteous man avoids 'public disgrace and deals quietly with sinners' ........ even if the 'law' demands severe punishment.

Further, Jesus shows numerous examples about how to deal with sin/sinner.
