TM,
to give an analogy, you can preach on and on to people about not breaking and entering into houses, and point out the benefits of not doing it, and the repurcussions of doing it, like jail terms or mob justice. But there are still some who will do it, regardless of the high probability of ending up in jail or with a tire on your neck. That is why we have burglar proofing, watchmen, guard dogs, multiple locks, security alarms, metal doors, gates and fences, etc.
Back to your point - I don't think anyone disagrees with you regarding the benefits of abstinence in the fight against STDs, unwanted pregnancies and such. For me the thing is, what about those who will NOT abstain? When I got to that age where I could actually convince a chic to jump into bed with me, abstinence was the last thing on my mind. Far from abstaining, I was like most normal guys in that we wanted to get laid as often and by as many chics as possible. So for us preaching abstinence was wasting your breath, if anything the best advice we ever got was on how to use condoms.
That's why I say we should take the burglar-proof approach to sex, as in, the same way we burglar-proof our houses, we should STD-proof and unwanted-preganancy-proof our lives. That's why I'm all for condom programs, birth control pills (both before and morning after), sex-education, etc. True, just as the anti-burglar measures don't deter all burglars, these anti-STD and anti-pregnancy measures won't stop all diseases and unwanted pregnancies. But, they will go a heck of a long way in reducing their influx and spread.
Finally, numerous studies have proven that promoting condoms is a much more effective way of containing STDs and unwanted pregnancies than promoting abstinence...
