Review of the Passion of Christ -
02-29-2004, 06:24 PM
Last night I went to watch the controversial movie. This has to be the proverbial "Ten Commandments" movie of this age. It will be watched by the old and young alike in the deepest crevices of the planet.
Be prepared for the ultimate blood-fest. I don't ever recall watching a movie more bloodier than this. The body of Jesus is literally torn to shreds by the Roman persecutors. Ultimately, that is not far from the truth. This is what really happened, according to the bible. The movie recounts the last 12 hours of Christ in vivid detail. You can almost taste the smell and dirt.
I was moved, almost to tears (I struggled to hold that tear drop back). This has to be a 10,000 tonne ooomph punch for Christianity and will further fuel its spread no doubt.
All in all, I give the movie 4 1/2 stars out of 5. It would have scored a full 5 if Mel Gibson had used a little less violence (Just a little less), and add one or two more flashbacks on the life of Christ prior to this.

I give the movie 3 stars because it's subtitled,we
have many folks out there who cannot read.

David, I concur. The violence therein was a bit too much....Mel, we get the point for crying out loud, no need of grossing out folk like that.

The violence note withstanding, I would say that I had a few other problems with the movie. It definitely is a powerful and moving picture, thats for sure. However, the introduction of those demonic children who tortured Peter and Judas was totally out of taste. This was inconsistent with the bible plus I think using kids for such satanic roles is totally unnecessary. The devil that kept following Jesus around was also not consistent with the bible. Of course, the writer and director of the movie have certain liberties as to what they would want to introduce to the picture. However, it being based on biblical accounts, one would expect it to strictly follow scriptures or historical accounts.
Just out of curiosity, the second commandment states thus Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Do you think that by watching the movie Passions of the Christ that depicts a likeness of Jesus makes one liable of breaking the second commandment?

That movie was a travesty...I demur at the whole concept of the movie.....It was disturbing and a very violent way of depicting the last days that Jesus grazed this earth....
It was unneccessarily too bloody which only served to provoke sympathy out of the audience than to relay any meaningful message which is what I feel should had been the intended theme.....
It was basically a bad movie profligated by meaningless violence with a wicked ploy to chastise and insult Jews.....It left a bad taste in my mouth....
I am still trying to see the purpose of the whole movie.....Was it to glorify how gory Mel Gibson can be with his imagination?????.....Coz seriously, nobody knows how bad Jesus was tortured if he was at all. To try and convince us that is was that grisly......that I have a problem with..... especially since nobody really knows what went down back then.......
The whole movie is cast on Jesus being whooped mercilessly with no other plot to complement, I mean, what is the point??????

Hey 10", what even prompted you to watch the movie? kwani they were handing out free pop-corn, ama they were cleaning the beer taps at your local watering hole?....you never cease to amaze me. LOL!
Mel is a Jesus-freak, and out to get them Jews...I heard his dad being interviewed and the old geezer was insunuating that the holocaust didn't even happen and that "those" people just wanted to collect chums...WTF?. I don't know whether I'll ever get the stomach to watch it.

chizzy,
I think the subtitles draws you in. you feel like you are experiencing the whole thing.
to the movie,
Mel wanted to make a movie that depicted how HE felt about the Passion of Jesus. I say he succeeded in doing so.
the brutality of it, the bible says (correct me Tmanager) Jesus suffered (beaten, clothes torn, the carrying of the cross).
As an entertainer, he brought that on the screen. If after seeing the movie, some of us learn something, then good. otherwise we should take it as an entertaining movie.
with the suffering that I believe Jesus went through, do some of us want Him being depicted as looking like Djimon?

The issues to contemplate about Mel's Passion:
1) How does presenting "Jesus" on the screen square
with the Second Commandment (Ex. 20:4)? 2) Is the film (as John Paul II
said, "It is as it was.") visually true to the Word, or is it "adding
to" the Scriptures? 3) Will the emphasis on Christ's physical sufferings
(the Catholic gospel?) divert people away from the biblical gospel (His
suffering on the Cross the wrath of and eternal separation from God due
us, to completely expiate our sins)? 4) To what degree is Mel Gibson's
extremely conservative Catholicism reflected in the film? 5) Is this
motion picture event another (albeit highly significant) inducement for
the rapidly developing market-oriented, entertainment-hungry,
ecumenically prone evangelical church?
