Religion, The Condom, Sex and HIV. -
02-16-2002, 08:18 AM
some time ago in meru, a priest and his followers were accused of going into clinics, confiscating condoms and destroying them, claiming that the were responsible for furthering promiscuity and spreading the HIV. previously, catholics andf muslims have seperately and jointly destroyed condoms in public to denounce their contribution towards sexual promiscuity. many other spiritual moralists also buy the idea of condoms being anti God's plan and that only abstinence from sex and faithfulness to one uninfected partner should be our means of fighting the AIDS scourge. several queries arise which i would like to invite you to consider:
*do you think that you are at risk of contracting the Human Immunodeficiency Virus?
*if the answer to the above is 'yes', what are you doing to ensure that you don't contract the virus?
*what is your HIV status? and if you don't know your status have you considered going, or are you willing to go, for the test?
*does the condom have a place in the fight against the spread of HIV?
*when you see a condom, or hear mention of it, what comes to your mind....'sex' or 'safe sex'? (the gist here is to consider whether or not condoms promote promiscuity.)
*how effective is abstaining from sex a weapon for fighting HIV? and for how long should one abstain?
*would you recommend condom use to your friend, brother, sister?
*Does God's plan to mankind limit human beings' creativity and reliance on artificial methods of modifying sex?
*since you began having sex, how often have you used or considered protection?
*what is your worldview of those amongst us who have the HIV or those who are in the AIDS stage?
*do you think that AIDS is God's curse to mankind for their numerous sins?
*and finally, what is your advice to all of us in relation to HIV and AIDS?
WELCOME TO THE GREAT DEBATE!!!!!!!! and may through it, you gain the motivation to modify your sexual behaviour for the better.

Wow! I hope your name doesn't describe your character. But I will answer your questions the best way I can although I still aint sure where all this leads to.
*do you think that you are at risk of contracting the Human Immunodeficiency Virus?
Of course am at risk. People don't just get infected by the virus by sexual contact. There are a number of contributing predisposing factors that lead to the spread of AIDS.
*if the answer to the above is 'yes', what are you doing to ensure that you don't contract the virus?
Don't engage in casual sex all the time and use a 'rough rider' when the urge is too much to handle.
*what is your HIV status? and if you don't know your status have you considered going, or are you willing to go, for the test?
Lemme pass that one. o.k. on second thoughts, I don't know my status. Secondly, am not willing to go for a test. Am scared to death.
*does the condom have a place in the fight against the spread of HIV?
Of course it has.
*when you see a condom, or hear mention of it, what comes to your mind....'sex' or 'safe sex'? (the gist here is to consider whether or not condoms promote promiscuity.)
Condoms do not only control the spread of HIV. They do control unwanted pregnancies and they prevent infection by other STDs. Of course SEX comes into mind. My view is, whether condoms exist or not, people will indulge in sex, I being one of them.
*how effective is abstaining from sex a weapon for fighting HIV? and for how long should one abstain?
Abstaining from sex as far as I know is the best way to fight HIV scourge. But we live in a crazy world. I wish I could abstain, but too bad it aint within my power.
*would you recommend condom use to your friend, brother, sister?
Hell yeah
*Does God's plan to mankind limit human beings' creativity and reliance on artificial methods of modifying sex?
I pass
*since you began having sex, how often have you used or considered protection?
90/100
*what is your worldview of those amongst us who have the HIV or those who are in the AIDS stage?
I pass
*do you think that AIDS is God's curse to mankind for their numerous sins?
I really don't know how God fully works to answer this question
*and finally, what is your advice to all of us in relation to HIV and AIDS?
Not to stigmatize those infected

masaa_always,
hi buddy, you have a way of honesty that i just like. nevertheless, let me seriously say that your considering the queries and answering them in relation to your personal life is quite encouraging. most guys would rather pass this thread because they are scared of HIV and feel, or rather hope, that it never catches up with them. by the way, don't be scared of the test. it would immensely improve your life! think am lying? well, this thread is in the political conference too. open it and see what others views are.

This is one of the best topics so far.
For starters, everyone is at risk of contracting HIV no matter your status. About my status "lets not even go there" coz am not willing to know. Condoms are so so, basically it's not the best way. My advise is to keep it real. ##### can happen only once and that's the end of everything.

jamoh,
why do you fear knowing your staus? don't you see that you will be in a better position to plan for the goodness of your health when you know your status? go for the HIV test, it gives you a chance! BY THE WAY, THERE IS A WORLD OF DIFFERENCE BETWEEN 'HIV' AND 'AIDS', so gain the courage and go ask the counsellors at the testing center tomorrow what the difference is.
and thanks for rating this as one of the best posts so far. keep healthy and safe my man!

Madiang,
Thanks for your encouragement!! I had a buddy who after suspecting that he had HIV he still went on and had a test. The truth is that my buddy was tested positive six months ago and right now he is at his death bed. My conclusion is that the fact that he knew one day he is going to die sped the reaction of getting AIDS.
But all in all I will still go ahead with the test......but not soon!!!!!

Put rings in your hearts and practise zero grazing and stop all the puppy behaviours and satisfy your women and vice-versa. All these probløems would be solved if we all accepted this as the best cure.

First i would like to thank who ever came with this topic you knew what you were doing.
Its very encouraging that you kenyans are now willing to face the reality of how the situation is. I salute you for that but the worst thing is that when you spill water you can't regain it. By this i mean you have to deal with the situation coz there is nothing else you can do about it.
since the tragedy is there, i think the best thing to do is try to protect it if not cure it and one of the way is the use of codoms. To abstain from sex is one of the hardest way to keep yourself from this shi_t but if you think you can its 100% guaranteed.
About if to get tested or not, i think this depends on individuals since i know some people will die sooner than they might have lived. What i would say is if you think you are strong enough go ahead and test your self, if you dont have the courage please don't even give it a thought. Personally, although i havent tried i have the courage to try although am not sure about that.
The other thing i would like to talk about is the issue of religion. Please don't put religion in this coz it has nothing to with it. Do your reserch and you will know the originality of this fate. i would have talked about it but i dont have enough evidence to prove my point.
Lastly what i would say is do what you have to do to keep your self out of this ka-thing mdudu sio mchezo. even if it means using a polythene bag mazee tumieni.

JAMOH: sorry about your buddy and sorry i replied late. firstly, your buddy is not desperate yet. we have medications today that can still bring him back to his feet.
true, some people are weak hearted and would not stand being told they are positive of the HIV. but this is bcoz people equate HIV to AIDS! if one has not yet reached the AIDS stage, it is so easy to shape ones life in such a way that s/he postpones the onset of AIDS. and this is the essence if going for the test: to know your status and take the necessary steps in relation to the results. having or knowing that you have, HIV is not the end of life; it may actually be the beginning of a most fulfilled life. finally, you say you will go for the test but not soon; well when is 'later and what will define it's arrival? go for it , jamoh!
KIVILO: i don't disagree with you. sticking to the prescription you have stated will surely help reduce the spread of HIV. but you should also acknowledge that there are many ways of killing a rat, aren't there?
MASAA_ALWAYS: well, even under 18s, and especially them, need to be targeted in the fight against HIV. they are very vulnerable, specifically because of their adventurous style.
WAMUTIRI: in so far as religon, culture and trends stiffle the fight against HIV they have to be faced head on! nevertheless, you have done a good post!
ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BTWN HIV AND AIDS; AND ANYONE HAS TAKEN THE TEST AND WOULD LIKE TO SHARE EXPERIENCE?
