Default Is Rastafarianism a Religion or a way of Life? - 12-01-2001, 02:35 PM

Many people misconstrue rastafarianism, simply because they know very little about it. Is it an upful way of life or a religion.

But rastas derive their dogmas/doctrines from the Holy Bible. For marijuana "Gonja" Gen 1:11, " Then God said, Let the land produce vegatation, seed bearing plants and trees on the land that bear friuts with seed in it according to their various kinds. And it was so. ...........And God saw it was good"(KJV) That is why rastas regard marijuana as a holy herb.

When we come to the dreadlocks, they argue that a man is not supposed to shave his hair. Lev. 19:27. "Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard. Lev. 21:5. "Priests must not shave their heads or shave the edges of their beards or cut their bodies."

Rastafarians, the followers of once the Emperor of Ethiopia, Ras Tafari(Son of Tafari) Haile Selassie, also argues that God created the black man before he "made" the white man. One theory of Creation, Gen1:27. "God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." These are the first people, black people, who God created before "making" from dust the white people.

Gen. 2:7,"the Lord God formed the man and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being." This was Adam and later Eve from his rib. Adam and eve, who were white, were formed purposely to till the garden of Aden, and when they had sex, they were cast out. According to rastas, this makes the white man the great satan on earth! The bodies of the white people look fake since he was "formed" but not created like the holy black man. Rastas argue.

Contrary to what movies have depicted Jesus Christ as a white man, rastasfarians have biblically disagree with that twist of fact. They believe to be the 225th tribe, direct descendants of David from the time of Solomon and Queen Sheba. Jesus Christ being black, is connected to King Solomon who was a black man. Songs of Songs. 1:5. "Dark I am, O daughters of Jerusalem, dark like the tents of Kedar, like the tents of curtains of Solomon. 6 Do not stare me bacause I'm dark,........." SOS 5:11."His head is purest gold, his hair is wavy and black as raven"

Other practices of rastafarians like women wearing head dresses, eating of "Ital" foods, wearing green, black, and red, the judgement day, are also supported from the Bible by the rastafarians.

Now all these leave me wondering, whether Rastafianism is a religion or a way of life.

Any insight?

Rastafarianism is a religion.

However, It beats me how hundreds of thousands can believe Haille Sellasie is God (Jah). He was just a simple man killed by Mengistu during the Marxist revolution.

Further, his bones have been exhumed and buried and thus theories to the effect that Sellasie was raised from the dead have been disproved.

In my opinion, Rastafarianism reads the Bible out of context in a bid to justify the superiority of the black race.

Tit bit: Did you Know Haille Sellasie accepted Jesus Christ as his personal saviour before he died?

Rastafarianism bring religion into the peoples way of life. If you look back at our traditional african setting which from lots of basis for rastafarianism, there is no clear cut line between religion and the way of life. It is a lot like Islam, religion imbedded into the peoples daily life. It is not one of those things that you put-on on Sunday go to church then get home take it off hang it in the closest till next sunday and take on another lifestyle. Jah people dress in rasta colors, listen to sweet Reggea, get they smoke on and pray Jah.

Default Double Standards? - 12-09-2001, 11:06 AM

Muramati,
It beats me how billions can believe Jesus Christ is God. He was just a simple man killed by Jews during the Roman Empire era.

Default TAKE HEED BEFORE YOU JUDGE THE RASTAS - 12-09-2001, 01:55 PM

READ NUMBERS:6, THATS THE BEGINING OF KNOWING WHERE THE RASTAS ARE COMING FROM, RASTAFARIANISM IS LIKE A NEW DAY JUST BEGAN, ITS THE OLD PURE RELIGION COME BACK TO LIFE, ONE THAT WAS PRACTICED BY samson, disciples(jesus of nazareth) JONAH, PAUL ANAIAS, AND OLDEN ETHIOPIANS.
we come to know religios teachings play a big part in our way of life. people should note that rastafari is among the most misunderstood religion in the world, there is so mch propaganda that goes on about rastafarianism. just like some muslims and jews dont understand how we see god through jesus, is the same way people dont understand how we see god through selasie. with the amount of evil absorbed in peoples hearts do you think if somebody came with a gods message know they would take heed??? it would just be a bunch of mockery...
read your bible well you will learn of believers even taking elijah, john the baptist and other prophets who were messengers of god to be their god. you should know there are like five denominations of rastas,(bobo shanti, ethiopian orthodox, twelve tribes of israel, nyiyabinghi e.t.c.) from the rastas i know(twelve tribes of israel which bob marley belonged), they take jesus christ to be god himself, whereus sellasie was whole human, and had gods wisdom in him for his oppressed people. read sellasies speeches and youll learn how wise our black brother was, its said if the western war mongers had listended to him at the time world war two might have never occured.
personally i view him as dedan kimathi, kwame, kenyatta fighting for a just cause for his people, which is wise.
with time i realised if i fight against sellasie or dedan , im really fighting against myself which is insane, for i believe they were fighting for a jesus cause, for jesus children.

Dear Brothers & Sisters,
It gives me mush pleasure to air my veiws on Haile Selasie who i consider to be a war criminal and colonizer. Haile Selasie the so called "god" of the Rastafarians was one of africa's many dictators. Ethiopia as we know it is an empire state. Emp.Haile Selasie (1930-36, 1941-1974) inherited colonies from his predecessor, Menelik. As you may not know,Abbysynia was the only "black" partner in the so called scramble for africa. As the Europeans were ennexing large portions of africa, so were the Abbysinians invading and conquring its neighbouring African nations. Abbysynia then changed its name to Ethiopia after including other nationalities into its empire. Ethiopia remained relatively independent from European rule. Blacks in the western hemisphere saw this and rallied toward Ethiopia as a liberator of all blacks. Haile selasie was elevated to the position of a "god" and a strange ideology called rastafarianism began to emerge. As Haile selasie encouraged the rastafarians to beleive that he was the liberater he intensively and systematically promoted Abyssinian history, language, culture, and values to the detriment of the colonized peoples*. The colonized people were the Oromo, Omotic peoples, Ogadeni's, sidama's, and various southern people's. Today when nearly all of the African peoples have won independence, the many nationalities in Ethiopia continue to suffer under the most backward and savage Ethiopian settler colonialism. Haile selasie was not a god but an African partner in the colonization of Africa. The Oromo people are not yet free those who believe in peace, human dignity and liberty should support the Oromo struggle*. END.
