Default Are Al-Shabab spoiling the image of Islam by harassing women    Show Printable Version  Print   Email this Page  Email

There has been this trend by certain sections or groups of people killing and harassing others in the name of Islam. We have always heard of these cases in Sudan.

But it is becoming more and more alarming with Al-Shabab group in Somali. So much has been written about this Islamist group and the actions they are taking against "perceived sinners". Latest case is where the have stoned to death a man and a woman is only saved death for the moment till she gives birth.

BBC NEWS | Africa | Somali adulterer stoned to death

Women are not allowed to wear padded bras as they will give a "false impression" of their busts/breasts...... the consequences are embarrassing, as you may end up being bared naked as they "verify" whether one is having "true or false breasts"!

Is this harassing or "acting goood" in the name of religion and preservation of it? Those in the know of the religion could enlighten...

Can you verify the news?
Or, is it enough for you that the news is reliable just as BBC mentioned it?

Don't know if your question is aimed at putting this as propaganda... but this is one of the articles I have read, others including from our local dailies in Kenya. the import of my question was not the source of the info as in many instances we have same stories from Somali and Sudan.... it is more to do with that fact.

You should double check the report as there are conflicting statements regarding the one who was stoned to death for adultery.
According to your "reliable" sources the "girlfriend" is awaiting to give birth before she is stoned to death, but according to Shebelle (translated to me from Somali language),the guy raped her and she wont be stoned as she was a victim.

Not "reliable" sources...... that said, does that exenorate them from the said acts of harassment and embarassment, or is it religiously sanctioned?

There was no need for me to verify, since that the was no any other source which contradicted the news.
But as the article which S/he posted, has been contradicted by another source, thats how I asked him whether he verified or not

Yesterday, my 5 months Old son refused to sleep and decided to play in the middle of the night. So I decided to take him with me to the sitting room and let my Adundo(sweetheart) catch her sleep while the men catch up. As the lights enticed him I decided to watch Mel Gibson's Apocalypto and Denzel's Great Debaters. Occasionally he interrupted my concentration with his sharp screams of joy. It became monotonous and I decided to do what babysitting men do best. Force a bottle of warm milk in his mouth. Of course he did mumble in some inaudible baby-world tongues, but as long as I did not comprehend I thought he was in absolute agreement.

I reached a scene in Apocalypto where some stuff were rolling downward from a top some Mayan pyramid or so. I was later to shockingly learn that they were heads of innocent captive humans, being grisly sacrificed to appease some imaginary gods. My head immediately went back to the story I had earlier read on Aljazeera web regarding a 13 year rape victim being who was stoned to death. It Must have been horrid. I wondered what kind of justice system is this that punishes the victim and does not care for one minute to go after the offenders? Needless to say that girl herself did report the horrible ordeal that was visited upon her- raped by 3 men.

BBC NEWS | Africa | Stoning victim 'begged for mercy'

What shocked me more was the response that the story elicited from our Muslim brothers. Some said it was a smear campaign against Islam. Others simply dismissed the story as false. Another group thought that Ajazeera was bidding for western nations. Never mind that the media house was very objective. Aljazeera was relaying a message that came to her via a Human Rights Organizations.

Al Jazeera English - Africa - Somali fighters stone 'rape victim'

Aljazeera is a reputable media house that cannot afford to soil its name through irresponsible practices and must have verified the information before publishing it, granted the sensitivity of the Matter. They are not even talking about Islam. Instead it is Islamists who themselves come out in defending their religion when no one has accused them of complicity at Aljazeera. Suffice to say that an offender always runs even when no one is after them.

What now disturbs me is the loud silence from the Islamic part of the world. What are they doing about Somalia? Surely the Islamic Arab world with their oil monies can help reconcile the warring parties and bring the much needed peace which as another alias for Islam. They could also help reconstruct somalia instead of letting ransom money which is haram be invested in Arabia.
