He showed the Nation copies of the suspension letters signed by director of human resources S.O. Owande dated March 27 in which the workers were accused of participating in a strike that caused the council to loss Sh13.5 million.
The letter informed the workers that they will receive no salary during the period of suspension and were required to report to respective heads of department every week and surrender employment cards to the council.
Mr Majiwa said salaries paid to workers were drawn from the Local Authorities Structural Development Plan account, claiming the move was illegal. He explained that Mr Gakuo’s performance was only concentrated in the Central Business District.
“Last week, Mr Gakuo pledged that the council will clear arrears amounting to Sh220 million owed to workers as “soon as possible” when funds are available.
The money is part of a pay raise awarded through a collective bargaining agreement of 2005, backdated 10 months.
This can only happen in Kenya.
Workers miss work through a strike demanding for money legally owed but get sacked.
They demand for 220 million owed for 3 years and the council proudly says that by not working that day, the council lost 13 million ( so ideally they earn the council 13 million a day yet the council can not pay them for three years a sum which they ostensibly create in one month!!!!!
Of course this is a simplistic argument-I have deliberately left out issues such as recurrent expenditures. But still they make a lot of money for them. Where is the logic?
