Default Who will save Zimbabwe - 03-31-2008, 02:28 AM

Zimbabweans went to polls on 29th March. Two days later, the opposition was claiming victory with only results f or some urban areas having been released. IRIN Africa | Southern Africa | Zimbabwe | ZIMBABWE: Tension rises as opposition claims landslide | Governance | Breaking News
And the security forces (military and police) are on high alert. It is too soon to say we might be heading the Kenyan way, but with reported tension - the question is, who will save Zimbabwe?

save Zimbabwe from what? the problem in Zimbabwe is not an entirely Mugabe issue as the international media would like us to believe. there is a plethora of external factors in play. its sad that the bRITISH colonial masters insist on always having their way in total disregard og the landless Zimbabwean peasants.

Even with the removal of Mugabe, someone will have to adress the problem of land distribution and ownership in Zimb.

I refuse to blame the foreigners.

I know many locals are squatters in their own country. I support land reforms but Mugabe did the whole exercise like a true african. He went about unleashing poor people onto the white farmers' land without order or plan.

Let me explain. He needed to identify the farms ( I am sure he did), then approach these people with a proposal to buy the land from them at the bare minimal. He could have asked the international community/world bank etc to finance the purchase. Of course I expect them to resist-he still has force as an option at this point. But first let the world know that Plan A is a civilised diplomatic approach.

Assume they refused. He then could have moved to these lands and adjudicate the land reasonably-agawe shamba properly with surveyors.Say sub-divide the land into 3 acre pieces and get the tittles. Then give the tittles to the landless in an orderly manner.

I have no finer details as to what he did but if he behaved like all african leaders-Kenya included, he allowed those with influence and those from his party to invade the land like ants attacking a month. Those who could throw stones got the best places, yet they could not agree on boundaries.

This degenerated into chaos. In Kenya we all know how ADC farms went to big cats instead of the poor people around the farms. It was the case in Trans Zoia, Mount Elgon, Rift Valley and Coast-government clears the forest to give to the landless then ministers end up with the land. This is our own homegrown problems. We should leave the foreigners alone and take responsibility on our own shambolic planning and greedy vision.
