Could someone be misusing office internet? -
08-02-2008, 11:24 PM
I have noticed that mashada is a bit quiet during the weekend and gets noisy again on Monday.
I wonder if there are some of us who sit in the office and use the internet to chat, send useless forwards and air their boring views on mashada. Pray, let us use the cyber for such leisure or install the internet at home. This way, i expect mashada to be busy at night and weekends. Let our morals take the front sit.
My friends abroad dont even take a phone call during working hours, and most of them write me mail from home. I love their discipline over there. I was told it is even nasty reading a paper during work, you might get sacked.
Assume you are an employer before you start misusing even an office pin. Before we blame Kimunya and company, lets look at our own corrupt practices.

Use Net wisely -
08-03-2008, 12:07 AM
This is a good one, I'm glad you brought this up, I love this - its my area.
The net, most (abroad) companies intranets are secure and monitored, they wont even allow you access to social sites like mashada otherwise they monitor everything you are doing on their network, I can only imagine our employers reading some of the posts we make here in mashada - most of us would have been fired without a second thought.
Otherwise not only in the company's network, be cautious of what you (and your family) do on the Net, Look at this: out of 1,150 hiring managers interviewed (in Oct 2006) 12% said they check potential candidates' profiles on social networking sites as part of their screening process. Of these 63% admitted not hiring an applicant based on what they found!
In December last year Olive Garden fired one of its general managers who'd worked for the company for more than 16 years because of a picture the daughter had posted on Myspace!
And many more (sound scary? ask me for the source)

Casual internet browsing during work hours could be good or bad.
Pros
It is actually a benign way to pass time. Very few jobs are continually busy. Work levels go up and down. Mashada politics is better than office politics and gossip. Office siasa can get you into trouble if someone snitches on you.
It is actually possible to get useful info, even from Mashada. Some of this info is professional (eg computer queries) and some of it may be social (eg in January, we needed to know where riots and trouble were, and on at least one occassion I canceled a trip to the CBD).
Cons
As you say, you internet activity can be used against you, or someone can quietly develop a bad impression of you, and wont tell you but will tell others.
You risk being "busted" if you provide private details, or political opinions (eg tribal opinions about Kenya) or sexcapade info of yourself or workmate/boss. "There's this chick who people say meets this manager after work...." na na naaaa....
If you get emotional, you may spend more time on a post/thread than preparing for a meeting!!
Okay!
So you're Type R?
THAT DON'T IMPRESS ME MUCH!!!

My bosses now use Facebook at work, so I don't feel so bad using Mashada @ the workplace. However, I do the majority of my surfing for fun at home...
I did not have sexual relations with that woman...her sister, maybe!

am a supporter for privacy advocates in the workplace but there is a problem with internet usage in companies not only in the u.s but worldwide and monitoring of employees is very crucial coz if people decide to use the comp all wily nilly then the company's network and system is exposed to potential viruses and threats as well as hacking. So if you are a business owner install that 'sonar' thingy that monitors comp usage.....dotnet should know what am talking about.

I work for a fortune 500 company and we have a system that monitors net usage..Everybody has a network connection, but not everyone can access the internet, the user profiles are made in such a way that we can even allow users access to specific websites and this is made by a request through their heads of departments.
Most Kenyan companies cut on cost and therefore lose out in a lot of wasted man hours with people logging on to sites like mashada. But thats an occupational hazard as in with the new tech ages, people always get a lot of diversions and distractions.. the key is to hire staff and pay them well enough for them to afford internet in their homes..and this abuse will stop.

Yep..
there is another software called Judas..that checks website usage per person.
Woe unto you if you are caught browsing porn.
Having said that, i doubt any human being has that level of discipline ati 12hours umekalia tu job job job job......sometimes you take a breather and peep into mashada to see what fellow kenyans are wrestling with ama tu help a brother who needs advise. Its all part of the fun.
Yes i suspect most guys use office mail, several have internet at home. but do i say?
Devil you are a liar and so is your mother in law

I don't think paying people more equates to discipline at work. Since I have internet at home, I access mashada and other sites whether home or at work..
