Do we have therapists in Kenya?? Like guys you go talk about stuff that bugs you and all?
All I have heard about are counsellors and these sound like clinical counsellors.

Pls help. I have issues in the past that need sorting out.

Try Amani counseling center, they specialise in counseling and therapy. They are located opp Airport view estate on langata/mbagathi way roudabout near wilson airport, they are also cheap. Or contact Dr Frank Njenga, hes abit expensive tho. All the best.

I thought the amani ones are like clinical counsellors dealing with rape victims and the like?
Anyway, I'll check out AgaKhan.

You need to help us understand your distinction between a "therapist" vs a "clinical counsellor."

Or I can google, gimme a minute...I found this article online.

Quote: -
Here are some general characteristics of counseling.
• It is concerned with “normal” problems rather than mental health problems.
• It is concerned with role functioning, with choices to be made, and with actions to be taken.
• It is more concerned with present events than with past events.
• It is more concerned with conscious, rational thinking than with unconscious functioning.
I think most posts assume that you're asking about the sick kind (Dr Njenga, etc), but you seem to want the "general life's challenges" kind.

I know Nation newspapers has financial advisors (this one I'll look for then post it for you, it's a lady), and Saturday nation used to have an insurance advisors. There are also nutrition advisors. Romance advisors? Check the popular mags - Parents, etc - and look for those who reply to readers' mail, they're often professionals with businesses. Career? Ask lecturers, professors, MDs, but try younger people coz the market changes like crazy.

Mix and match and patch it all together...

Hope I'm not off on a wrong tangent??????

No, I'm looking for a shrink. The kind you lie on their couch and moan about your daddy issues and men stuff etc.

They basically help you sort out your emotions, past hurts etc.

Shrinks are properly called clinical psychologists. Americans love their shrinks as they have a whinning character, and no social support.

In Kenya we do have clinical psychologists, especially in major hospitals. However, like all other cadres of doctors, they are few and far between. Most of the head-shrinking business is taken over by psychiatrist, who in the western world specialise in treating loony bins. In Kenya, they treat all non-organic brain diseases.

Thus this is the difference:
Shrinks (clinical psychologists) treat neuroses and minor psychiatric conditions.
Psychiatrists treat major wazimu ( psychoses)
Counsellors treat very minor conditions like alcoholism, wife beating, marriage, homosexuals, etc.

Go see a psychiatrist in Kenya. He will do the same thing.

Thanks mwolovi, but if you don't have anything constructive, just keep off the thread.
The fact that people choose to supress their issues doesn't mean they don't exist.

In Kenya we have so many people struggling with issues of growing up in violence, rape by fathers etc etc, so don't trivialise it please.
