RE: Where is This Technology leading us -

I'm in a technological field...and yes it has uplifted somewhat our perceptions of what good life is. However we strive so much to accessorize and integrate this or that...that we arent really living.
We are more rushing to get the latest craze...have a cell-phone...have a home theatre system...have an ipod..etc
To an extent technology is becoming a way to divide humanity from those that have access to those that dont. And in most cases technology is linked with money another divisor of humanity. The more we become technologically crazed the less REAL social interaction we have....instead we are immersed in a virtual world.
We may feel at first that this is how we should leave...however the virtual worlds, chat-rooms, instant messenging all fall short of real contact with each other. For instance you may try and work hard and probably with some success...but you cannt say that if someone offers you an emoticon hug via instant messenger when you are bereaved its better or more empathetic than someone giving you a real hug.
There is so much more that happens with face to face contact...the non verbal cues...cannt really be picked up via instant messenger. I personally feel more alive when sharing my success and failures with someone real rather than a T1 connection with someone with a high quality web camera.
I feel saddened when i go back to africa and see how people are crazed to implement technology into their daily life. How has cell-phones uplifted the lives of many a kenyan? They have resulted in less ques on the phone booth that would have meant for interaction with real people. They have resulted in less visitations from family and friends. Well people decide i can as well call you instead of going all the way...we can talk on the phone and thats that...life continues...the technological cuffs strengthening on our wrists, feet, neck...yes...they may be sparkling...and we may be dazzed by looking at them...and the perception in which they put us in....prevents us from seeing the reality. We are suffocating ourselves.
With increase in technology...there are higher rates of depression, insomnia, suicide, paranoia, irritability, apathy, anger, frustration.
And then we seek medication to aid our problems...or alcohol..or caffeine...to give us a boost. We convince ourselves with a few studies that we are ok....we are ok...because we do our work...however do we really smile...are we really content?
No life becomes a chore because of technology....and with it unending bureacracy and red tape.
