Default To stay or not to stay - 03-07-2004, 03:07 PM

I was just chilling the other day, and was having some serious thought about my future, career, etc etc..then I stumbled upon this question, "am I going to go back to kenya for good once am done with what i came here to do???" I know that there is no place like home, but, was just wondering, how many of u who are currently out of kenya would go back go forever once u have finished whatever u r doing overseas?? Take into consideration the current economical status in kenya. Personally, the only reason i shipped my ass here was to get good education, and with good education n a focused mind, ur life is set. I know its good to go back and help build ur country, since if the cream of the nation decide to exile themselves, what would kenya have in order to move forward? But at the same time i was thinking, prime ministers in kenya get paid an average of $7,000...and over here, thats how much teachers get paid!!! I'd like to hear ur opinions...do u plan to study n work, get enuff chums, then go back home, or, are u going to camp ur asses in stato/uk, wherever u r, for a loong loong time, possibly till ur very old, or even forever???
let me hear u out

I am sure that every immigrant grapples with this issue of whether to stay or whether to go home. This is a personal issue and can not be generalized. The decision will depend on your own circumstances.

I went home last December, and I decided that I am not going back , at least not in the near future. I believe I am more reliable to my family here than there. If I go home, I am not sure whether I will get a good job. Nevertheless, If I get a well paying job I am going to go. Remember the US is not what it seems, I have decided to stay, but I know that I will face very many challenges.

Otherwise, good luck and keep on working hard.

Himself.

wait till you 65 then go back and live off social security check mailed from state 800 dollars every month. or deposit 200 a month in murual fund by the time you sixty you will have about 200 thousand cash. lived like like a dog retire like a king. or get limitless credit card and go and campaign for presidency in one of the poorest country in the world. the sky is nolonger the limit. the limit is how far you can see.

Personaly, the issue of going back to settle in Kenya has never appealed to me. Taking into consideration, that I can never get as much pay at the end of the month as I would get elsewhere, I think I would be better of here... unless of course Kibaki changes things, which isn't anytime soon I presume...

Jarrateng,

I kind of agree with you. I was at home visiting this past Dec. too and before I left the US, I thought going back was the only logical option - Kenya Damu & no place like home... BUT, from the situation I saw in Kenya, for sho, there is no way I am going back to stay in the near future. Visiting most def, but to stay, mhhh..., and anayway I'm more useful here than there on any given day - atleast to my family and myself.

I'd say not to pack your bags and go back without having gone to visit first. I still love Kenya though it may not sound like it right now; I think it's the place to be if you got mad cash.

Playeress I totally feel u on this one. Infact I too posted a similar topic a few months ago. Same situation and all when I was just thinking about how we can defiantly say "I love Kenyan- I AM Kenyan- GO Kenya!" but when someone asks if and when we're going back all we can mumble is"...um...er...I dunno....":(
Truth is, like someone said above, it depends on ur personal situation. Your parents/guardians sent u all the way to the US/UK/etc in hopes of giving u the best education they could. But at the end of the day what good is a good education when all you can do is go back home and sit on ur ass all day with no job? What Im doing now is just trying to gain as many contacts as I can wherever I can, be it in the US or Kenya because at the end of the day you have to go where the money is esp when you're still young and green because its really hard to land that dream job in kenya when you're wet behind the ears.
Dont feel guilty if you find that you're hesitant to return home just yet. My advice is to save a few dollars that you will later be able to invest at home. I think thats the best way to go.
Again, like someone else said, work like a dog here and retire like a King there.

Crazyboo actually firestarter was right in what he was saying. No one juas whether you are a mwenyeji & i tell you i know some lady back in Kenya who gets like $1500 in benefits. You just organize some account where they will deposit your checks or you can organize with someone to deposit them for you.

About going back home thats a good question...> Surely i want my paros to be able to see me everyday as they grow old....see their grand-kids e.t.c
But as starter said investing will help you move back home comfortable. Investing in a Roth IRA account for like 15 years($3000 a year) will make you live nice after turning 59.5 years old....> This is an advisable option. Also having a 401 K with your employers helps.

I might be in the States for the next 15 years trying to create a niche in my career so that i can go into my own business when i go back home. Its not predictable but as they say," East or West" home is best. :)
