Default Advice on moving to the US for masters, and hopefully a future    Show Printable Version  Print   Email this Page  Email

Mashadites, kindly assist.

I'm stuck. I'm in my final year now of undergrad in Eastern Europe. Before, I somehow knew that home is the place I'd run to sooo fast immediately after I graduated. That at the moment I'd be wearing that graduation gown and getting my diploma, my packed bags would be waiting for me outside my room. I always had that dream of going back home and establishing a career from scratch, but now, as that time approaches, I'm a little bit uncertain about this, and would like to pursue all other options.

There's the States, Australia, Canada and other English speaking countries. My question is, is it easy to get a scholarship for masters in Engineering, and if yes, which schools are a bit easier to get into, or don't charge a lumpsum, and offer worthy degrees?

If there's anyone from Western Europe at Mashada, I'd really appreciate your views as well.

Please also help me out on real prospects of finding employment after obtaining the masters, if it really does matter.

Your input would be much appreciated.

The biggest thing that you will have to do is preparation, First congrats for graduating with an engineering degree, Eastern Europe as I have heard despite of good education the conditions there can be very difficult to black peeps.

That said and done. For the US the first thing ofcourse is to research on the schools you want to apply to. Get atleast 15 schools and also the region

Then register for GMAT and start some serious study, Make sure you get very good marks.
Because of going to school for you degree in a non english speaking country you may need toeffl too.

Some colleges require research competency and clinical internship.

If you have some work experience in your field it may count a lot.

If you are gunning for a scholarship then it needs more more research and preparation

That said talk to Sanaa she has some very good experience when it comes to eng programs in Finland

Good news most of the education in Scandinavian countries are free to graduate level and if you can be able to get into some very good solid engineering programs

GMAT?

If u hope to apply in the USA, start working on that GRE, and score very highly. Very few Engineering graduate students pay from pocket. They apply for teaching assistantships.

I know a school close here that offers those, ingawa they favor students from China and India. They have 2 Kenyans in Civil Engineering (doctorate) and 1 in electrical. Will get back to you.

Sir/Madam, Would you be kind enough to tell the Mashada clan your former name? And now its offical, the Mashada Academic advice office is officially open. Its actually the trending topic in Mashada these days. Come to Mashada all thee with academic problems and Mashada idlers will solve them.

And speaking of engineering you don't know what you are getting yourself into. Just from getting my generous share of antidepressants. Got a picture now?

I stand corrected. For a purely eng degree GRE would be more to your favor. Anything to do with management should go the GMAT way. The school you apply to will give you more info

Msema Ukweli and A.M.N, thanks a bunch. I'll look into those.
And for Kapuf, sorry for not making your day by not asking for advice on a non-issue. Please feel free to kapuf,

Thanks. I'm actually studying for GRE at the moment. Actually I haven't graduated yet - not until May. Are there any unies or states that are recommendable? I've been thinking of Michigan State. I'll be graduating in Electrical Eng. Nafusi, thanks again. Your help would be much appreciated.

Huko Michigan kuna ukame. That state is so broke I am not sure they give students money anymore! Anyone surviving in Michigan?

I am familiar with UWM, and there is a prof. hukoz who kinda likes Kenyans. He is Scandinavian. As for a future, check out the kind of engineering.Start with salary.com. You will see earning trends and job prospects. That chemical Engineering is bogus. As of 2007, Electrical had better prospects. Civil/Mechanical engineering- U might just end up teaching. I do not know what Bio molecular engineering is all about.

But again, things change.

Moving to the US for Eng. Masters is OK..as you do your research focus more on Electrical,Telecommunications and related Masters courses since they will be very useful now and in the future...however i'd advice that you dont think of settling in the US..to be honest the US is not a place to try and store your eggs..time will confirm this..
