Default Greetings to All Mashadites    Show Printable Version  Print   Email this Page  Email

It has been quite a year, ama?

I have enjoyed interacting with most of the mashadites here, the majority being decent, intelligent fun loving folk. There are a number of you who have offered me immense inspiration and support with one particular person helping me to set up one of the most memorable DUNIA interviews that I have had in quite a while.

It is impossible, so I am not going to even try to single out the most oustanding contributors this past year in this section. Personally, I think this is kind of a futile and often counter productive endeavour since what I hope we are trying to achieve here is a sense of community where we all participate and contribute in various ways, including simply lurking and drinking in the often crazy exchanges.

I would be dishonest if I did not DENOUNCE the infantile trash talkers who came perilously close to transforming mashada into a regional headquarters for puerile bedlam, personal putdowns, tribal tripe and twisted hatred. In my opinion such immature selfish behaviour takes away from our efforts to congregate and create yet another green patch and fresh oasis in the wild, cluttered expanses of cyberspace. If I had my way, I would have these tots confined to a kindergarten/day care for the rest of their natural lives.

In the last couple of months, it would have been strange if ANYONE FAILED to notice that there WAS a moderator in the politics section, which is kind of ironic because my natural tendency is to be INVISIBLE as a moderator. For instance, i bet nobody has noticed the existence of a yahoo based group called http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Siasa-Kenya/. I launched this group almost five years ago now and still moderate it to this day. Yet I never talk about it at all ANYWHERE and it is 100% self regulating. That was the approach I brought to Mashada and I am sure many of you will agree that by and large, until quite recently as a MODERATOR i was largely invisible, preferring to put up with the garbage that was often thrown my way. Matters changed when I realized that I actually had at least one foul mouthed STALKER who followed me around in all the forums I participated in, apart from inundating me with unwanted private mail using a range of email addresses. At first I was amused, then annoyed to find one individual going to the extremes of registering multiple handles, cloning me, stealing my essays, trying to replicate my blogs etc, with the express purpose of keeping up a daily diatribe against yours truly. Anyone who doubts that Oloo has a stalker should visit http://kenya.rcbowen.com/talk/index.cgi?limit=50, use their search engine and type in my name and see the number of DAILY postings coming from the keyboard of one particular person, all focused on Onyango Oloo. It was very disheartening to find that somebody was quite prepared to transform this section into a personal venting room against the so called OO, an individual that they had never actually met. You have seen this individual cross the line to involve members of my family including my son and dearly departed like my parents and siblings.

I have refused the masochistic advice offered by some well-meaning Christians that I take this selfish abuse lying down, allegedly because I am a "public figure" who uses my real name and therefore fair game. With these trash talkers I have moved quite firmly often coming to loggerheads with a number of people on this forum.

To say that I regret taking these drastic actions would be quite misleading because I actually DO NOT regret acting decisively to uphold the integrity of this section, which is after all, the POLITICS section of Mashada, rather than the BASH OLOO DAILY section of Mashada.

Moderating this section is quite a thankless task and I have stayed on largely because of my respect for David Kobia. I would much rather be an ordinary contributor posting my digital essays as I do in other forums. I never applied for this gig, and as many of you know, I even tried to quit sometime last year.

This coming year is going to be a transition year for me. On the Kenyan front, I will be working behind the scenes with a group of progressive Kenyans to set up the kind of alternative political structures I have been detailing in my essays. I will also take my writings offline. My book project which I thought would be a simple one of putting out a book of my selected essays has since then mushroomed into at least 4 books in the works. My plan is to roll them out one by one, starting with the launch of the book version of my play "Chelagat" followed by a joint book(co-authored with Adongo Ogony) on the Constitutional Review process, followed by a collection of my poems and finally the first of two volumes of my digital essays. This will imply devoting a lot of time to editors, printers etc. I am hopeful that perhaps towards the second part of 2005 I may visit four or five cities in Canada and the United States(Toronto, Vancouver, Boston, Jersey City, Dallas, Minneapolis-St. Paul) on a speaking tour to promote the above books.

Which implies that I will have very little time for the daily foolishness from some Mashadites. I therefore intend to take a very backseat approach to many online forums, largely restricting myself to posting links to my blogs and brief comments on other postings by other mashadites. I think I am now on very firm ground wehn it comes to taking legal action against any cyberstalkers so in the new year you will hardly see me respond online to these creeps. I will let them know offline that I do not make empty threats.

I certainly hope that the two words, "Onyango Oloo" are NOT among the most ABUSED words in Mashada come 2005. In fact I would LOVE IT if people TOTALLY IGNORED me and focused their attention on the burning issues concerning Kenya.

There are many people who have applied for the Moderator's job. Seriously if you think you are up to the task, please contact David because I can certainly do without the pesky distractions that come with the territory.

Something tells me that this thread will get more than one response. Just a hunch.

Your hunch is right. Here is reply number 1

Kindly advise your publisher to avail your books in Kenya too or at least have them on the web bookshops. I would love to read the one about constitutional review.

While you are at it please holla when u get to Nai and we can have that kanywaji we talked about soem time back.. on Kamale's tab.

May I take this opportunity to wish you n yr family a happy and prosperous 2005. I have already started hammering the cold tuskers.. waiting for the fireworks in Carni to usher in the new year.

PS: By the way OO, which category of mashadites do I fall in... the "Outstanding Contributors" or the "infantile trash talkers" :-)
Just be plain and honest .. I want the naked truth.

Your post started well in a rare friendly and conciliatory tone and then all of sudden you relapsed into the grumpy old you...the whinning, gripping, grizzling paranoid schizophrenic. Loosen up a little for me now and party some... its new year's eve for Chrissake!

Default hope the new year brings growth!

the smallest package in Mashada.com in 2004 was a man wholly wrapped up in himself!
I hope that in the new year you will GROW UP and GROW OLD gracefully.
