WHY OH WHY IS THE KENYAN MASSES INTO HIP HOP?? -
01-26-2005, 12:46 PM
Guys I've been seriously thinking about this situation for such a long time it's hurting. Being black, from Africa it would come naturally to understand what hip hop is. You got to Kenya and peeps is listening to Britney Spears. I'm not tryna hate on other muisc but Kenyan love that muisc. Rock Night at carni is packed. You ever asked a Kenyan chicjk what kinda music she love, she'll blantantly say out loud= ROCK like that #### is the fashion. Chicks talk like they from the valley Californuia,,,these are black KLenyan chicks. I don't blame them they know no better. The radio is promoting a white lifestyle. It's drink, dance to bull#### music. No one is kicking that real deep ####. The only deep cats, K-Shaka or K-South got overlooked by the media.
The DJs are so wack, they promote that crap kapuka. A copule years back this DJ started playing on radio but failed to make an impact. No club in Kenya has a hip hop night. I went to a so called hip hop festival where the DJ played rock. Somebody tell me what's going on.

I can just tell your age from this post. youre probably in your early twenties. What's going on is an identity issue..growing pains..you want to be who you think you should be but you find yourself surrounded by people who all seem to have turned into something else(by listening to rock instead of hip hop).
You know what maybe all that i just said is bullsh1t..maybe it's nothing like that at all..all i'm saying is that i was once there...i found out about rock when i was in high school..it is music i hold dear to my heart because high school was hard for me (like everyone else) and one day i listened to rick deez weekly top fourty and i liked some of the songs and decided to investigate further. Rock is special to me coz how i found it..at a place in my life when i was down ...... it wasn't about trends for me..i almost feel vindicated by all the rock hype going on in Nai coz i feel i was way ahead of time and it is all that much more sweeter coz i took so much crap from people coz i actually admitted publicly that i love rock at a time when hip hop had peaked in kenya (early and mid nineties)
So i struggled with this for a while coz i'm black and why the hell did i like this rock..... and i tried to stay away from it but that made me love it even more.....it made me feel special to know about songs that no one else knew. Over time I have grown from that..now i listen to it coz i actually LIKE it.
I have come to accept that it is okay to love all kinds of music. you don't have to feel pressured to like hip hop and rap coz you're black. Music is just music. To me it's a mood thing...one day i feel like Reggeae the other day Salsa the other day Rock or Jazz..the other day classical..and then the next day..who knows? I'll find out tomorrow.. Let me enjoy what i'm into today coz that's all i have.....my music selection is very diverse and that's a good thing.
I think that people who consider themselves 'purists' of any kind of music be it Rock or Hip hop just want to feel special. The people who claim not to listen to 'fake' and 'commercial' hip hop.The so called real hip hop heads. It's just something to make you feel like you're not part of the sheep..the masses..that you are advanced. That's ok by me..hey whatever helps you sleep at night man.
As long as you don't attack me for loving why i love.

Cats be getting mad philosphical like their life depends on the muisc they listen to. This is a forum of discussion not making friends. I don't care what muisc you listen to.
@ supreme- Am not in my twenties. Am grown, own two companies and am all over the world to give a #### about crews and friends. All I was saying was everywhere i go, I tend to end up at hot hip hop clubs that play that revolution, consious and banging muisc. I don't want to name clubs, what i didnt understand is why not in Nairobi.
I gives a #### if you listen tyo rock anr what have you, Just explain o what happened in nairobi a city of 100% black folk but no hip hop club. That's all and if you know any let me know where they at. If not don't worry bout my post. Damn

Yawn!!! another one of THOSE people!!!!
I can't stand it when people act like listening to rock is somehow 'betraying' the black race...that is such bullsh1t !!! so what if i listen to 'real' hip hop , whatever the hell that is, that means i am blacker than someone who has different tastes? crap crap crap...again if you wanna feel good about yourself then knock yourself out my friend..don't knock what i'm listening...and yes i am being defensive coz i listen to rock music and last time i checked i have not magically mutated into a white person....like the kind of music you listen to defines who you are totally!!! christ ..who are you people...
It amuses me to hear kenyan 'hip hop heads' keepin it real .....it's so funny to me..the point of hip hop is being accepted for who you are not forcing your ideology down someone elses throats..that's why original hip hop(late eighties early to mid nineties) was so huge man coz it was about representing you and where you are from...the only place where race counts in hip hop is America coz THERE ARE WHITE PEOPLE AND BLACK PEOPLE THERE!!!!! All kenyans are black!! so race doesn't come into place....
Be yourself my friend....ebonics is cool WHEN AMERICANS SPEAK IT not Africans!!! you don't sound cool when you speak it ...just stupid. i am so tired of akataz complaining that africans try to hard to be black americans....
anyway let me go listen to my WHITE ASS coldplay cd.........

Wewe Thierry or whatever f.u.cking french name you have keep your faggot ass crap for yourself ......if youR oppression in school is what turned you to listen to rock then thats it ....thats you nobody can change you ...in this world there are losers and winners .....losers lose and winners win ..i guess you fall in the losers category .....in the first post you clearly stated you hold rock dearly cos you found it when you were down in life....so whats with this jabbering and jibbering ...i kinda agree with you that you can love all kinds of music ...but in no hell of a damn minute will you get me listening to taarab or mettalic rock {whatever its called} ..cos i hate such music period ...i dont relate to such kind of music ......people are different and some people listen to music they can relate too....why you think the masses are turning to listening to Hip-hop ..cos it covers a wide range of subjects something they have gone through something somebody close to them has undergone..thus they relate feel the pain.....but look at rock{and i aint trying to down rock matter of fact i give a listen to SOME rock bands etc and i can tell you most rock bands steal materials from hip-hop artists and music}......what is in rock except jumping and screaming ...nothing .......look at club music in noway will i get turned on with rock music but if you put some lean back i will lean back i aint in that s.h.it of jumping and showing i love you signs nooooo...COS THATS ME ....... but i do respect guys decisons why they are what they are .....COS THATS YOU ...if blackthought loves Hip-hop ,kayimba ,sukus lingala, ndombolo or Katitu boys its not you job to tell him what he likes is for black-americans ....some guys suprise me so by wearing clothes means you are trying hard to be european cos in the yester centuries our fore-fathers nver used to wear clothes ....step up and dont try to down one cos of what he listens OK.............COS I WONT DOWN YOU FOR BEING AN OPPRESSED LOSER IN HIGH SCHOOL WHICH TURNED YOU TO LISTEN TO ROCK ...IT MEANS IF YOU WERENT OPPRESED IN SCHOOL YOU WOULDNT BE LISTENING TO ROCK RIGHT??????? WE KNOW PEOPLE DONT LIKE SOMETHING UNLESS THEY TRY IT OR IT GROWS IN THEM
