Default Lovers of all things Africaine - 04-28-2004, 10:27 AM

The Month of May has been billed the "African Month" at the Royal Festival Hall. To this end, they will be shows featuring some of the big names on the African music scene, including

-Mory Kante; 17th May 2004. He put Africa music on the map with 'Yeke Yeke'.

-Africando ;26th May 2004. For all you Salsa lovers out there, nothing beats gyrating your hips to the sounds of Africando.

-South African Gospel Choir: 29th May 2004. The closest you will ever come to experiecing the dulcet tones of Angels.

This is just a shortlist (covering the shows I hope to attend). Other performers include Sally Nyolo and Angelique Kidjo. For more information, google Royal Festival Hall.........

All does not begin and end in May............

-01st June Mama Afrika aka Miriam Makeba. At the Royal Festival Hall.

-29th June 2004 Her Ex, the legendary Hugh Masekela. Please note Bra Hugh will touting his horn at The Barbican.

Folks, some of these stars are not getting any younger, the world may wake up one morning and be hit by deadlines like "The legendary so and so is no more" RE: Nina Simone. So get there if you can.

Let The South Bank be your Second Home this coming May.

Yep, they do that as well as other stuff e.g Salif Keita and Abdulla Ibrahim (Dollar Brand)were at the South Bank last Nov and prior to that, in May, The Dedication Orchestra (formed in 1990 to commerate the music of The Blue Notes), put on a splendid performance in the Purcell room featuring Louis Moholo (original member of the Blue Notes and the only member of the group still living), Keith Tippet, Evan Parker, Harry Becket (veeery charming old man te he!). The South Bank also features Free jazz/ salsa sessions in the lounge during the week and over the Weekend, so it's quite nice to pop down on Sat/Sunday for brunch and nice music.
