Default What Genre/Category of Music Does Eric Wainaina Perform? - 07-23-2002, 12:54 PM

I have heard of this Kenyan guy, and recently I happened to listen to his CD, Sawa Sawa, unfortunately a bootlegged one.

Definately this guy has a talent, but I couldn't identify his class of music.

There was a mixture of Lingala, Jazz, some songs sound like slow rhythms, some sounded like Country.

How can one classify his CD Sawa Sawa??

Does this guy really make sales, or its just a media hype?

Who is his audience since he sings in 3 'mutated' languages?

Let me hear from his fans, not just 'carried away' fans, but informed, critical and also fans with insight.

i listened to his CD also and i think it should fall into the category of world music.

kwanza i m just being polite coz enyewe three months ago when i first heard his whole cd i thought it sucked so much that if this thread was posted then i would have semad something like, it should be in the COMPLETE NO TALENT CRAP, music category but, not to worry, it grew on me pole pole and now its one of my favs.......

You would have to create a special category just for him. For those who don't know Eric, he used to sing Gospel with "Five Alive" back in the day. The group split up and Eric is the only one still singing to date. He might have been experimenting on this CD, hence the different languages, rythms, etc, or might have wanted to capture all Kenyans' attention, hence, the lingala, jazz, etc.

I have a very biased opinion here but I think he is AWESOME! He doesn't have a band, as yet-he was a student until not long ago at Berkley School of Music in Boston, and so just performed with other students there.

Check out his websire: www.ericwainaina.com
Yes, I am a hard-core fan since 1988!
