i cant claim this to be 100% but I think the swa part was written by someone else. It was then incorporated into the song. my assumption would be that Michael or the one who wrote it, didnt know that Swa is not spoken in Liberia.
I stand to be corrected on this though. Also, isnt swa the most widely known African language.

Michael, Lionel, that TV show V, have all incorporated some kidogo swa. Plus 2Pac mentions it in the song "Troublesome 96"

Let me begin by saying that I am a Micheal Jackson fan to the bone! Infact 'Liberian Girl' is my second favorite song on the BAD cd after 'Leave Me Alone'. However I have always been baffled by the way this song was written. First of all it's Iman who says nakupenda pia nakutaka pia .... she's also in the song's video. At the end of my cd, in an interview, producer Quincy Jones says Iman (he refers to her as the African girl) is speaking Zulu and then they name the song Liberian Girl! WTF?? Talk about ignorance! You'd expect they's do some research on the language and get to know Iman better before they produced the Album. It's just like the James Bond in which they refered to Nairobi as the capital of South Africa!

"A kunguni is a small kasamu, it lives in a kitanda mwalikwa, it bites people makoma, it is a good defination."

Heh heh!
Sometimes ignorance can be entertaining. I often wondered about "Liberian Girl", I guess having them whisper sweet nothings in English ama Creole would not have had as exotic an effect! Hence Kiswahili/ Zulu :7 !!!!!!!!

For more entertainment, check out the movie "Ashanti" (relatively old, I think Michael Caine acted in it), and "Bourne Identity".
If you ask me, these are classics in the "Africa is in Nairobi" genre.
