Watched it.
It's pretty good though thoroughly depressing also. The director is Russian newcomer Vadim Pereleman and he does great i think although he depends too much on the bleak weather to convey the 'it's a lose lose situation' atmosphere. Jennifer connely was good though i thought she did the same thing she did in 'A beautufil mind'..i.e play the depressed down and out chic. I think she was a weakness in the plot coz at the end her story does'nt make sense and the director does not seem interested in her. The high point of the film is of course Ben Kingsley as Iranian emigre Mahsoud Behrani. He is just too too good this guy ....just superb. I mean the accent and mannerisms..uncannily accurate. If you haven't watched any of Kingsleys films you would have thought he is some Iranian actor. He's that good.. Shoreh Ahgdashloo is excellent coz her performance is a study in understatement..that's why she nabbed the oscar nomination coz at that time 'suggestion' was the in thing in Hollywood as opposed to the crude over the top grief we are used to seeing.
This is a good film, good acting...if you can ignore the implausible script you'll have a great experience esp as an immigrant.

Thierry,
I love Behrani's character. I read the book, and I must admit it wasn't half as enticing as the movie was. I cried like a lil' b***h at the end when Ishmael died and Behrani ran to the hospital, revoking himself for ever taking that house from Kathy Nicolo, praying, crying - very emotional stuff.
The plot was awesome and very realistic especially for aliens in the contemporary society today per say. Mr. Backhaus I beleive is an alien himself and was probably using the book to convey a special message of 'staying strong when the storms arise' to other aliens, lest the same fate that the Behrani family faced be faced by them.

No B,
drat and darn were the only bad words in the whole movie. Imagine
that. Nothing that would rock your boat. Nothing like fu** me hard or
big d*ck. No sex scenes either. And if there were any, they were
all in missionary - not much to write home about on your end. So no
gurlfriend, don't watch the movie. Besides, after I tell you that he
was shot in the Streets by Kathy Nicolos boyfriend, watching metal
rust would be a better idea - wouldn't it, B. So go on witcha
porno-watching, dildo-abusing, forever-horny, bad ass-self ma - go
get that 'lapussita mexicano' dvd you know you've been dying for.
Leave the intellectual shytt to Thierry and Miss
Bradshaw over hurr.
