I loved the both book and movie.
The two scenes that gutted me was when the Sheriff's kids were crying in the car asking their stupid daddy not to go man that did things to my stomach and then to hear him say that his old man did the same thing to him am like how then can you let your children go through the same thing?
Then the ending when Esmail died oh man that ripped my heart out that was something.
The acting was good Sir Kingsley's performance was superb as usual although I think that the plot was a titbit misguided. Cathy's anger shouldn't have been towards Behrani as such but rather the stupid clerks at the county office who wrongfully charged her for business tax she did not owe. And I think that Behrani made that point clearly when he asked her "why should I be held responsible for their incompetence?" that right there was the core of the movie if you ask me.
It wasn't Mr Behrani he like many people in the world benefit from the lose of others such is life. He did not steal that house he bought it. Therefore he had every right to sell it at market price.
I think Cathy lost because she misdirected her anger.
Granted it was an inheritance the only thing left of her father she was entitled to feeling like that towards the Behrani but not expecting them to give her back their house.
Her lose was their benefit that is the only part of the movie I had a great problem with.
Behrani's wife on the other side played a role that just cuddled my insides the overpampered and oppressed wife who gets slapped around by her hubby. She played the part very well.
Another thing I noticed in the movie how we human beings love to keep up appearances. I guess acceptance of self is one of the harderst things and very few among us master that art. An apartment that cost them US 140,000 and the rumors that he was working for Boeing etc etc.
Hey if by any chance the role of Cathy(Connolly) was played by Nia Long do you guys think that royal treatment when she stubbed her foot in the nail, when she wants to kill herself Behrani rushes out of his house to save her then carries her off into the hao and lays her on his son bed while his dutiful wife prepares a warm bath for her would have been accorded to her?
I personally doubt that would have happened.Especially the way Behrani seems to think very little of the Americans comparing them to little children always looking out for the next pleasure. What then would have been his attitude towards a black ?
I think he would have called the cops and charged her with tresspassing and probably thrown in something extra like intent to inflict bodily harm etc etc (as she had a gun).
Great movie nonetheless.

Dude,
I think you are amazing. Umechambua kitabu kabisa. Mad props.
One qstn tho'. Given a situation where you were in Behrani's shoes, wouldn't you have at some point, given back the house back to Kathy Nicolo. It was obvious that the woman was desperate to get her house back. It was her birthright. In my opinion, I think behrani was a fool not to have seen the disaster that was broiling in the yonder. After Kathy Nicolo attempetd to commit suicide right on his porch, and after all those desperate attempts to stop him from selling the house, and even have her bf threaten to deport the Behranis, surely! Plus he come to the United States on assylum. This is after all Corporate America. He knew very well if anything happened, his family would be deported and executed as his wife so fondly reminded him. Sometimes you've just gotta know when to stop. Behrani was obviously not a very intelligent man per say, judging from the decisions he made, especially at the end of the movie, where he kills his wife and himself - like- what the hell was that supposed to solve??

Mrs Chethnut,
The drama that came with that house would no doubt make me sell, but not give the house back. It was auctioned property and as is the common story with all things auctioned someone's loss becomes another person's treasure.
If Ms Niccolo would pay me back the house at market value yah sure I would sell it to her. Because the point is very clear am in no way going to jeopardise my finances for matters of sentiment value. That house for Beharani was more like a future investment for his son Esmail's education. I wouldn't play good samaritan give me the market value or the someone else is will. I still think that Niccolo's anger was misplaced her fight should have been with the local authorities and not the Behranis as for her stupid sheriff boyfriend he was there to what is a long standing belief men think with what is in their pants first then the brain kicks in. In the end he was all decked in good old orange was it all worth it? His were petty threats that would not materialise in the other US of A in the current one perhaps his threats will most definately fly
I think the ending potrayed Mr Behrani as a very weak man. A man whose power really came from his current status in Iran. When he is left at the mercy of his own self control he loses it. Smacks his wifey and in the end kills her because he doesn't think she is strong enough to handle the tragic death of her son. He didn't give his wife enough credit she knew that her little boy was gone.
I also think that Behrani in the end potrayed what happens to human beings when certain obstacles are thrown in their way that they can't overcome or accept. They slowly self destruct and sadly it is noticed when the damage has already been done.
So anyways Mrs Chethnut do you think if Nia Long was playing the part of Kathy Niccolo she would have been accorded the same treatment?
