africanews - kenya: 68 newborn babies named after annan - rss english
A new- born rhinoceros in kenya and about 68 male children in different hospitals in kenya have been named kofi annan in honour of the former un secretary general.
Baby kofi has been born in almost all the provincial general hospitals except garrissa in north eastern an area that is predominatly muslim. The rhino on its part was born at the wekend in the community owned ol choro oirugua conservancy in the maasai mara reserve. The birth was especially significant because it came in the wake of an announcement that a new strategy had been adopted to increase the number of endagered species. "the naming does not suggest that the beast and annan have horns, it means that both will need a thick skin to wade through the wild," the united nations said in a statement. The new strategy to save endagered black rhino's seeks to raise the numbers from the current 540 to 700 by the year 2011.
The babies born in eastern, rift valley, nyanza, coast, central, western and nairobi provinces were a pointer to the hope kenyans had on annan to midwife a solution to the post-election crisis.
