Why did they wait till it was too late to raise the alarm? It reads that tomorrow friday February 23 is the final day of submitting any opposition to the registration?! And the amount they need for the lawyers £4,500 equivalent to Ksh607,500 could easily be paid off by the kenyan government if they do indeed care! Can you imagine if it was the other way round i.e Kenya registering to obtain a patent for a British generic name?

news is that the company actually is owned by kenyans or is affiliated to a kenyan company and they want to trademark the name KIKOY and not KIKOI.
Again for business pple i don't see how it's hard for them to come up with the UK£4,500. I think there's more to this than the eyes can see

AM NOT CHEAP, JUST BROKE

Maziwa, you have more info than I do.
Shortee, I agree. UK commercial attache amelalia maskio...and this should go on his performance appraisal...(I understand civil servants are supposed to do these)
Kikoi/kikoy is all the same, ebu brew yourself some beer and call it Buddwiser...and say it dont matter..

Wine producers in Champagne, France patented the name Champagne and anyone else making bubbly has to call it sparkling wine.
Kenya has some patents to claim. Take safari for instance, you can go on all the game drives in the world but if you are not in EA, you cannot be on a safari!
So if kikoy want to make that cloth, they can make it all day but they shouldnt call it kikoi/kikoy...

I think it is rudiculuos to say that that amount cannot be raised for such a vital cause. I am sure there are private donors, business people, and more practically, lenders (loan) who can provide such money.
Anyway, this is a serious issue. I think Kenyans have to rise up to play these games with the west. We have to use our educated people to plan ahead for issues like this. Someone described the Safari move and was definitely a great one. I don't know about how this current case will go but I think people who are at stake for certain brands should learn from this and patent what they got. Lets learn from this and not be surprised again by an issue like this one.

Points..ni kweli its time we went to war on the commercial front. Last time it was the Indians who saved us from an American patent on the Nem tree (mu-arobaini).
I strongly believe we should patent the Safari name for any Game Drive one goes for in East Africa. SA cant be offering "safaris"...
