Default UCHUMI - 07-13-2006, 08:59 AM

Just want to register apparent dismay at what the govt has done to Uchumi. Why are they so selective! Bustrack fell and nobody rushed in to revive it. It also emplyed Kenyans just like Uchumi sup. It also was a service sector enterprise and more so it was an essential service in view of trying to decongest the traffic snarl-ups in NBI. With the price hikes at the pump, many Nai people will have to suffer more as they are at the mercy of the only major operator Citi Hoppa. My bone of contention is this:
1. Why did govt not revive Bustrack? Reason coz Citi Hoppa, the only competitor belongs to the politically correct.
2. Why increase the fuel price and fail to revivie a transport carrier that would have helped check price hikes from momopolies? Ans: to make the govt. big-wig (owner of Citi Hoppa) richer in the face of the 2007 elections
Currently, the prices of all commodities have seriously been affected upwards thus majority of Kenyans who screamed their voices hoarse in 2003 will have to bear the brunt. Lets be wiser and keep the off-shoot (NARC Kenya)and the mother (NARC read DP)away from governance.

Keep power games out of business! I'm always wondering why the Government all this time along never sounded the alarm over the happenings at Uchumi yet it knew everything that was going on. The Government moved with speed to rescue the besieged supermarket chain abd this lends credence to the specualtion that it all along knew the fate of Uchumi before it closed it's doors on June 1st, 2006. We have heard the story of Nakumatt evading duty and also employing "savage and unethical business tactics" to undermine it's competitor ( read rival), to gain an undue advantage and the preferential treatment it was being given, taking into consideration that it's major shareholders were politically correct individuals. This was a sad day for Kenya, not only to the employees and shareholders of the giant supermarket chain. The role of any Government is to create and sustain an enabling environment for business and entrepreneurship to thrive and thus it should be at the forefront to level the playing ground to enable businesses compete effectively in this era of liberalisation.
