Musikly speaking has haunted me kabisa! mpaka nilienda samawati productions to find out if they have copies of their artist's albums. I was told a funny story of some "legal issues" that have prevented samawati from re-issuing the music lakini siamini. You know, kenyans are going to lose alot of great music if we don't become more proactive-imagine you cannot get poxi presha's albums! why??
next time niko kwa area, assanands and tamasha ziko kwenye agenda. Hata kangari house! haha. Woiye now why are folks nyimaing us ngomas, ati legal issues? it's at times like this that i feel music pirates wanaweza kuwa good guys after all. Now, pray do tell why poxi's albums hazipatikani? ama it's coz he was such a crusader agst piracy? kama ni hivyo, basi i'm glad nilinunua hiyo album all those years ago. Sasa inaweza kuwa collector's item, eh?

lol. So we're just standing by while enlightened wazungus come rescue our music from the abyss? eh. Mwafrika kweli bure. Jameni, mbona tuko hivi, watu? and it's not like we don't have the resources. Ni priorities tu zenye hatuna. Anything relevant to our history and identity we just tupa in the trash. Tusipofahamu tunakotoka, tutajuaje tunakoenda?

And who is this someone? we have a whole ministry dedicated to culture, i guess? it's amazing that the very same way we've callously handled our historical origins and events, not putting anything in written record, is the very same way we are playing with our music heritage.
you know, i agree with you 100%. Hiyo ni kawaida ya mkenya, i'm sorry to say. you find that the most groundbreaking research on kenyan history and culture is going on in european, american etc universities. And it's not ati because we don't have capable scholars. Ni vile tu we don't invest enough resources to support our academics. You find the british or american foundations are more interested in knowing which vichochoros mwafrika passed through as he went down the nile than the mwafrika himself is. And then of course politics always interferes.

Btw, what does the ministry of culture fanya? just curious because enyewe sijui.

I too would like to believe that vok/ kbc didn't sleki sana hivyo. Na hata urtna, si wako na archives, one hopes? people like fred obachi machoka kumbe tuliwachukua for granted them days and they were playing an important role.

I've suddenly remembered these ageless ones:

1. "Kitanda changu nyumbani ni cha kamba. Kunguni wamejaa, waningoja mimi..."

2. "Ayee Maria ee. Bembeleza mwana oo. Safari ni ndefu, tutaliwa na simba. Oh-oh-ohoo Maria..."

Them sweet days.

Shinaski,

I haven't read this entire thread for itis too long-23 pages.

Infact, i've only read two pages, the first and the last (23rd as i write this).

That said, the song is SIGALAME by ISSA JUMA.

Nilipofika nyumbani kwake

Sikumkuta Bwana sigalame

nilipouliza jirani zake

Waliniambia ameshahama

Oh oh oh Sigalame, uniambie anaishi wapi (x2)

[beats]

Miaka mingi Bwana sigalame

Nyumbani kwao hajaonekana

Wazazi wake wanalia sana

Miaka mingi hajaonekana,

Oh oh oh Sigalame, uniambie anaishi wapi......
