@pcat. You've got the soul of an angel. I think you are just being sympathetic with da gal. I mean I don't see anything flashy in her.

Couldn't agree more.

If I may..

There are 4 things that draw attention to this girl's face:

1. Very big, beautiful, clear eyes. They kind of give her a pretty innocent-schoolgirl look.

2. The lips are full, one can tell that despite the makeup. Nice smile.

3.She's got pretty high but full cheeks. Now considering that this is a pretty slender girl, that translates to healthy and well fed (just my simpleton opinion, but then again si we africans like our women to have a healthy appetite). Not a bad chin too.

4. The broad nose. Ok most would think that it would take away from her looks but on the contrary, I figure it won her the prize. It's actually the first thing you notice, and because of it you are made to study the face more closely and hence notice everything else about her. An african nose is supposed to be broad anyway. Besides beauty is when you look good despite your flaws, otherwise it wouldn't be natural now would it?

On the hair thing, the issue is not about it being long or short (personally I prefer long), but about it looking good when it's 100% natural. Make-up? I would rather they did not put any on, but then again I am just a humble quack critic.

Now, if I had to choose the Nokia Face of Africa.... well let's just say we would have to throw away the current rule book and come up with a whole new set of criteria.

These women are beautiful no doubt, but how many hours and thousands of shillings went into making each one look picture perfect?

Take off all that make up and they be just your average good looking lady on the street.

I think the point people forget is that being beautiful is one thing.. being attractive is an entirely different ball game.

Beautiful will make heads turn for a quick look and perhaps a bit of a drool, attractive will hold their attention and more importantly stick in their minds long after you've left the building.

@ Wired Wierd
I totally agree with you....plus did you notice that they are all light skinned women which by the way automatically translates to beautiful women. I never get why people equate darker skin with ugliness...really I dont. Yes they are beautiful I agree but would they still be the same beautiful women if they had Alek Weks complexion???

True,
I guess, we shud not look at both extremes pekee....dont reject all dark skinned mamas then select the light ones, or the other way around. But what is being done by the judges of mnet face of Africa is choosing the africanest of the afrcanest....which i think is good, becuz hey, its the "face of AFRICA" , but at the same time, its unfair, coz not all african mamas look like what a western dude would think of as being "typically african". Some have slightly longer hair, or lighter skin, but whats the sin in that??? Not all mamas bleach their skin to be light, or weka weaves to have longer hair. Some are naturally just THAT, and I dont understand why they should be sidelined.

See now that is where the western influence comes in. It's ironic though, if you look at all the previous Faces of Africa and most of widely known african models, you'll see they are all dark with short hair and just damn tall. Look at most beauty peagants locally and kila msichana is lightskinned, long hair (fake or not) etcetera etcetera. So the question begs; Is it the west that has it all wrong on what we consider beautiful, or do africans strive to attain the "western" image of beauty as we perceive it. In my personal view, they both have it partly mixed up.

I liked the concept that a certain company came up with. I believe it was called "Lux somethingortheother." Take your everyday african women, wives and mothers of whatever age (they had to be naturally pretty ofcourse) and give them a makeover and let the public vote.

Anyway this issue can be debated till the chicken come home to roost, but the bottomline is that it's all about what brings in the bacon.
