I'm sticking to your question "what are they giving up?"...correct me if i'm wrong but i thought it was all about *giving and taking*(unless one party is 'out' of it/could not be bothered(is inanimate)/a rape case scenario)..er which implies an equal amount off forethought,effort,pleasure and yes...culpability (if any?)of both parties in question.
