If you think that Kenyans abroad are hypocrites only when it comes to their lifestyles then let me enlighten you. When Moi came to Australia(that's where I am)for the Commonwealth thing about a month ago,a group of Kenyans here were meant to go salimia him and hopefully get some chums. The guy organising this ego-stroking adventure is called Ole keeko and he was supposed to call as many of us as possible and organise transport(part of his job).It turns out that he only selected a few individuals to accompany him.Since they showed up few guys, they were given US$1000 each, which translates to Aus$2000.The saddest part is that the few select comprised of a marjority of Kalenjins. Now,isn't it bad enough that we are tribalistic but when we diss each other when we are so far from home, all for the sake of money,it is pitiful.
I just hope all you Kenyans out there are as outraged as I am and hope that we can change this attitude we have.Greed and tribalism are not going to take our country anywhere.

Success may be described in many ways. So we cannot call everyone who says they are doing fine hypocrites unless we understand what success they are reffering to. Some of you sound like you are telling others that "you are better off in Kenya than in the richest country in the world."

I know people lie about abroad and that is wrong, but it depends on the way you look at it. Don't take people as a group but take them individually. People abroad may be having a lot of debts, or other trouble but may be they have at least a place where they get a regular pay check unlike Kenya. Take my case for example, I don't lie to people back home by the way, but anyway, I thought this place was heaven when I came but that was short lived. I had numerous problems trying to settle but I don't wish otherwise because even if I don't earn a lot of money now, at least I can go to school and do what I have always wanted to do. Back in Kenya, I got admission to Uni. for a course I never even applied for and I had other financial frustrations like fare to and from work when I had jobs, by the way, pay was irregular and so was the work. Today, I may struggle paying my bills but I am happy to have things that I would never have dreamed of in Kenya. Even if I never get a job with this education when I get back to Kenya, I am at least happy that my dream of doing what I had always dreamed of has been realized. If you ask me if I am successful, I feel that I am.

The real truth in this issue is that the only people who should find America, Britain ,Australia, and other fine destinations dissapointing are people who were well-to-do in Kenya or others, who are too detached from reality. When you live in these countries for a short while, you will realize that money is not just collected but you work hard for it and when you accept this, you can do a lot for yourself.
Another fact is that people expect that even if you are lazy you should automatically become rich if you go to foreign countries. Come to reality and realize that even if you give 10 people the same amount of money and opportunites, others will do better than some over time. In short, we all don't have the same qualities even if factors were kept constant. For this reason, you will find that some people will be more successful that others. Take US for example, go to different cities and you will see alot of differences in the way Kenyans are doing. You will find some people with a lot of money, and others without. Even if this might be a regional factor, there is also the element of ignorance. If you know how to maximize your use of resources, then you will find rich countries appealing. You should also know that most people who come here have no other work experience worth putting down when applying for jobs, or even due to some technicalities that would require you to indicate no experience, yet you can get a good wage, though depending on what city. You will find employers who are even willing to train you so they can keep you. Tell me how many places in Kenya you can get decent employment this way without "knowing somebody" or other corrupt ways. I bet they are very few and those that do are jobs that you would rather not tell anyone about.

Remember that it is not only people from Kenya, but people from all over the world who scramble to come here. If there was nothing that they got from it, then by now (for example, in Kenya, it has been about 10 yrs now that people started getting crazy about America) the numbers would have at least dropped. You will be amazed that even with events of Sept. 11, number of visa applicants are soaring high.

Lastly, don't just generalize, take some time and ask somebody who says they are "successful" what they used to do in Kenya; you will be suprised to know some people who were just secretaries with irregular jobs, manual laborers, others who never had a chance to go to school, and the most are those that had finished high school and had no jobs or anywhere to go except some small college, which is where everyone else who did not get admittance to uni. or could not afford was also attending.

Im sorry but theres now other way I can say this any better..... This is some B U L L S H I T!!! I havent seen anything this bad for a long time now. Come on now, whats worse than saying that Kenyans abroad are putting across a false image of what life trully is. In the first place, there are will ALWAYS be more oppotunities for people living abroad (depending on where that "abroad" is). If people are willing to apply themselves, Kenyans are enterprising people....it just takes a little work. What I really want to know is.......ULINYIMWA VISA??
