Default Nyanza Province leads in new grim poverty figures - 03-07-2002, 01:34 AM

I am so amazed that Nyanza of all the provinces is leading in poverty. I am not trying to pick on anybody but I think its high time guys need to plough back into their communinty.
With all the Kisii in New Jersey and Luo in Texas here in the USA.....what are you doing for your people back home....something serious need to be done coz 64% of the community living below the poverty is a shame.

This whole article is a mockery of the entire poverty situation in Kenya and Africa at large. The fact of the matter is poverty is nationwide in Kenya. I don't think it benefits anybody in Kenya to conduct some worthless, time consuming studies. The problems stated in that publication, exist nationwide. Attack the problem not the people! and definately not they tribal origins.

I disagree.

I think it is important to carry out these studies in order to formulate policies that go towards improving the standard of living of ordinary wananchi.

I think wananchi need to take a long hard look at these figures especially in light of the upcoming elections, and then use them to challenge the aspiring leaders on their vision for the future of Kenya particularly as to how they intend to combat these grim poverty figures.

Also beyond the usual rhetoric, I would like to know why Central Province has a 32 % poverty rate yet the rest of the provinces have over 50% poverty rates.

These questions need to be addressed and the issue of education comes in because unless one can articulate an economic agenda for his people, they should not be elected into a leadership position.

Default Political ruses - 03-12-2002, 12:03 PM

I find it interesting that the poverty figures were finally 'released' for public consumption in a general election year, and conveniently categorized along tribal lines, to isolate and spotlight alleged disparities between different
voting constituencies.

Not to make light of the plight of the poor or anything, but divide and rule is all it is.

There are lies, damned lies, and then there are Statistics.

Bryo

It was actually by provinces not along tribal lines.

Otherwise how do you suggest that they be categorised?

Also, as you can tell from the article, these are studies that have been done on a provincial basis ever since independence.

I think groups like the Central Province Development Support Group and the Lake Basin Development Authority should actively seek to both build new schools and improve on existing ones, create new job opportunities by introducing industrial plants into these areas.
