It's no secret that Eldoret will be a city before Moi steps down. It has always been his dream and his pet project.

However it is this peddling of political propaganda and political rewards that drives me nuts. You have fools running around petitioning for their towns to be turned into Cities as if the following day will bring manna falling from heaven as a result of being named a City. These ng'ombes do not udnerstand the first thing that being a City implies.

They remind me of the Tanzanians in 1967.

Many remember Tanzanians celebrating for days on end after the dramatic and populist Arusha Declaration. It wasa well written document drafted by professionals, technocrats and expatriates.

After the hullabaloo died down, what became clear is that the mwananchi did not know what the Arusha Declaration meant for him. The wording in the document was too complex for regular folk and the local district administration to interpret and put into action. In other words the mwananchi did not know what was expected of him on a daily basis in order to achieve the grandiose goals set out.

So implementation became impossible and the declaration a flop.

These guys calling for Cityhood need to understand what a City Charter means not just for the council but for the residents first. Higher taxes for the wananchi perhaps would suffice to let them realise that being a city is not exactly all it's made out to be.

All these guys clamoring for city hood do not know the tax burden theyre gonna carry just to have the word "City" at the end of their names.
The property/real estate tax and corporate tax is gonna be killin especially to the normal man. They first need to understand what it entails before they start jumping up and down the streets in celebration.

Eldoret will be a city most definitely, i mean Nyayo has an airport, army barracks, bullet and armo factory and even a Navy(psche), in that town.
And to top it all he has built a serious bunker(i have been there)that would make Saddam envious in a 3,000 acre farm grabbed from EATC. So, lets just say its his pet project.

But the underlying issue here is the delivery of services to the townsfolk, yes they are gonna have a city, get an added tax burden but are the water, garbage collection, sewer and educational services gonna improve???

Agreed. Start with an education for the general populace on what this becoming a "city" entails.

Sad Indeed.....probably city status means new jobs, improved infrastructure & well equipped schools...in their wildest dreams,siasa,siasa,siasa...have the lives of wanainchi improved in Kisumu & Mombasa coz of city status?

I hear you. I wish there was a way we could issue a directive that all residents of newly crowned cities show up in a massive city wide cleaning effort a spar tof the duties of being City residents.

They'd get over the City Euphoria quick!
