Default Tiger Woods Latest Win on Kikuyu Grass    Show Printable Version  Print   Email this Page  Email

Tiger woods latest win on Kikuyu grass. Tiger leaks his tee shot right into the Kikuyu grass, dropping choice words for his golf ball during its unintended flight right.

Rocco takes advantage of the small opening by stripping a 3-wood down the fairway with "Rocco Rhythm." Tiger woods with a 358 (358 always wins the U.S. Open, right?) on 91 holes finishing at one under par is your 2008 and 108th U.S. Open champion. 2008 U.S. 2008 U.S. Open playoff live blog

Default Kikuyu is the word

Kikuyu is the word
There's lots of kikuyu grass in the fairways and rough on the Torrey Pines South Course, and golfers and TV commentators will no doubt be talking about it a lot.

"I think perhaps to put it in the shortest description, Pat Gross, our agronomist, has described kikuyu as Bermuda on steroids," USGA president Jim Vernon said at a news conference Wednesday.

Check this UC-Davis article on Kikuyu grass. It was imported to the USA in 1918 from Africa.

And this article on the USA Golf association adopting Kikuyu grass. The article says that Kikuyu grass was imported from Australia and South Africa by the Boers (Dutch/Afrikaans) of South africa.

Kikuyu grass is called "chesakwa" in my mother tongue.

Aside from the kikuyu grass issue, lol, Tiger cannot be human!! I watched most of it (US Open) and wow! he kept coming back over and over despite his injury. Poor Rocco little did he know that he was playing against an alien!!

Default Tiger grew up on Kikuyu grass

The last time Tiger Woods won the US Open Championship was 2002 when the Father died. He did it again on Kikuyu grass 2008.

Tiger was brought up playing on Kikuyu grass.

"I absolutely loved it," Woods said. "It was the first time I could actually use the ground. I grew up on kikuyu grass golf courses (in California), and you never would bump-and-run a golf ball there. I thought it was neat to putt from 40 to 50 yards off the green, hit 5-iron from 135 yards and run the ball. That to me was fun."

Default The Kenya Government should Patent Kikuyu Grass.

The Kenya Government should Patent Kikuyu Grass.

The Kikuyu grass has proven commercially viable and was imported from Kenya 70 years ago.

An American has patented the Basmati Rice, a grass grain they stole from Asia which is a clear case of biopiracy.

Default Evidence of Commercial Viability & Kikuyu is the finest form of grass

Today Riviera is famous for two unique things. The grass is Kikuyu, a strong, tough strain of grass that was imported from Africa over 70 years ago and used on polo grounds.

The grass is so strong that it can withstand the strain of horses running back and forth. About the time Riviera first opened, polo was big and there were many polo grounds around the course. Their are many convincing stories on how Kikuyu appeared at Riviera, but the myth most often told is that one night after a local polo field was seeded, a huge windstorm carried the Kikuyu seed onto Riviera and took hold.

Since the grass was a weed it grew very quickly, but the superintendent ignored its encroachment. Before he knew it, the course was taken over by the grass and it was too late to change.

Today Kikuyu has blanketed the course, making pitch and run shots impossible because the thick grass grabs shots.

Many believe that Kikuyu is the finest form of grass to play on as every lie in the fairway has the ball sitting up. Over the years Riviera has been smart. Instead of resisting the growth of the grass it has learned how to perfect Kikuyu.

The other unique attribute at Riviera is the sixth hole, a 170-yard, par 3 that features a bunker in the middle of the green, making the putting surface doughnut shape. If a player's ball lands on the wrong side of the bunker, he is then forced to chip over the bunker, and, for the average player, that means taking a divot out of the green.
