Luo Culture, Lifestyle & Religion
Luo people are among the few Kenyan tribes that do not traditionally circumcise their males as an initiation to manhood. Instead, in Luo traditions, initiation involves the removal of six front teeth - three each from the upper and lower jaws.

Another unique Luo custom is wife inheritance whereby, if a man dies, one of his brothers or close relatives inherits his widow and must meet all of her marital requirements. The Luo mourning ceremony, tero buru, is still widely practiced. This is a unique, elaborate and dramatic ceremony that symbolizes the departure of a loved one.

While most Luos are now Christians, many still uphold most of their traditional cultural customs. This is especially true for those living in the rural areas. However, some of the Luo cultural practices now regarded as retrogressive are slowly fading away, such as wife inheritance. As well, recent efforts have been made to promote male circumcision among the Luo, Teso and Turkana people, to help curb the spread of HIV and AIDS.

Perhaps one of the most interesting and noticeable attributes common among the elite, educated or urban Luo people is their flamboyant character and sense of style

look at this luo man killing a kikuyu, this primitive persons will kill you coz you did not vote their god (raila).

OMG!!! (regarding the teeth)

About wife inheritance the elders ruled that one out. Sssumu explained that to us.

The other interesting one is "beating the corpse."
But I still can not get over the front teeth thing!!! That one I did not know!!!!

ADDED TO THREAD:

Sssumu Wrote-

The council of elders have been able to rule on the following;

Wife inheritance for instance has been outpractised.

'Marrying' women corpses who died 'single' at the time of death has been 'outpractised' too.

'persuation and intimidation' of rebel corpses has been demystified.

Circumcision is now encouraged.

Polygamy is discouraged too.

This is what sssumu told us:

Some time back It was a mystery that a luo corpse would 'refuse' to be taken for burial where (s)he did not wish.

Somewhere along the way, the the corpse would jinx the journey. The vehicle carrying his body would develop a series of mechanical problems, or may be the corpse would 'jump' and fall down while in the coffin, or may be scream from the coffin, the very bad ones would have the hearse involved in a fatal accident. BTW, even to date hearses getting involved in accidents is not a novice.

The remedy was to explain to the corpse and 'persuade' the corpse to 'accept' to be taken for burial. If he remained 'unrelenting' the next option was 'intimidation'. Threaten to abandon him in that wilderness, some ppl would 'discipline' him a bit.
That was to flash him from the coffin and literally slap him, or turn him on his butt and give him some strokes of the cane.

Mysteriously,he would 'succumb' to the pressure and oblige.

I forget what this thread is even about

This is misrepresented. The removal of teeth had nothing to do with manhood. Both women and men practised it. Luo were born men, they did not need any silly initiations to be men. The removal of teeth was an innovative way to help tetanus victims get cured by allowing the feeding of the victim even when the jaws are locked.

This is not unique to Luos. The Jews had this tradition and since the Luos descended from upper Nubia, this Jews custom must have been picked from there. It was typical of nomadic tribes to have wife inheritance. There are so many instances of it mentioned even in the bible.

Culture does evolve, point taken. I have yet to see any retrogressive culture per se. HIV is not spread through uncircumcised p.enises, it is spread through homosexual multiplicity of partners. Circumcision has not prevented HIV or even shown any significant lower levels of infection as is being trumpeted. Stay away from promixuity and HIV will not touch you, circumcised or uncircumcised.

This is stereotypically nonesensical statement.

Same could be said of mungiki, sungu sungu, et al. In fact the Kikuyu kill their own for not killing the Luos who voted Raila, now that is amazing.

We do have our front teeth, whether we are Luo or not. It is because of good upbringing. We eat our carrots and tubers. We eat less candy and sweet biscuits from house of manji. We drink water and not coke or sweetend juices. Our parents took us to the family dentist doctor Shah twice a year. We visited the family Physician a doctor Ochuodho once a year and for every slight cough or flu. We used to be told brown teeth comes form poor nutrition and bad brushing. We used to spend 15-20 minutes just brushing our teeth and after that switch off the lights and see whose teeth glow the brightest in the dark.

Tell us your story growing up and how you acquired your brown teeth. Maybe you can also help us understand why Norman Nyaga with his riches could not fix his denture, and why your beloved Uhuru a millionaire many times over has teeth resembling a goat who has seen many days of chewing herbs in the nanyuki planes.
