Last week science now released it's finding on ol doinyo lengai, of interest is a question raised on the on-going discussion, “...it seems unreasonable to think that the volcano would be taking on the characteristics of volcanoes on the sea floor, on the off chance that it may itself possibly be on said sea floor in millions of years.”
Ol doinyo lengai's idiosyncrasies have puzzled scientists since the 1960s. So, volcanologist tobias fischer of the university of new mexico, albuquerque, and colleagues gave the volcano a more intense look. They focused on another peculiarity: the volcano contains numerous small fissures inside its cone that are venting gas coming directly from the mantle layer deep below the surface. Normally, volcanic vents are larger and quickly mix with the surface air. The team reports tomorrow in nature that the gas they collected from these fissures contains carbon dioxide, helium, nitrogen, and argon--indistinguishable from volcanic gas released from vents in the sea floor. Essentially, the volcanology of the region is beginning to take on the characteristics of the processes at work at the bottom of the ocean, because that's where the great rift valley is headed. volcanic fish out of water -- berardelli 2009 (506): 1 -- sciencenow |

after analyzing the gas samples taken from the oldoinyo lengai, the team of scientists discovered that a small occurrence of partial melting of minerals in the earth’s upper mantle is responsible for the source of the rare carbon-derived lava erupting from the volcano. alchemy in tanzania? gas becomes solid at surface of oldoinyo lengai volcano - us news and world report

That is what the experts say, and this is not the first one. They are saying the cycle is complete for the land to sink. Volcanic activity has 'eaten' into the core of the earth mantle and emptied it out of its belly at the top of the mountain. Elsewhere in Ethiopia the land is spliting and sinking.
