kenya is hoping that the new united states president will maintain strong ties between the two countries, water minister charity ngilu said. Whoever is picked between democrat barack obama and republican john mccain should not put a lid to aid that supports key projects in kenya. “i remember the many projects that the us launched when i was minister of health; i wish that the new president will not stop implementing them,” she told the nation on the sidelines of the national democratic convention that started in denver, colorado on monday.
Mrs ngilu said she was attending the convention as a representative of the (kenya) government. World leader she said america had asked people not to read too much into presidential candidate barack obama’s kenyan connections as “he is a world leader making a difference in america”. Mrs ngilu, who was accompanied by human rights activist anne njogu said mr obama was seeking to be a president of the usa, hence his links were immaterial. She spoke highly of the discussions at the convention, adding they had offered interesting lessons on how democracy thrived in america. “we need to ensure that our politics is issue-oriented and mature... American politicians had total loyalty to their parties, unlike in kenya where politicians defect to other parties on the eve of an election to ensure they are voted in.” the minister declined to react to continued attempts by anti-obama critics to link him to prime minister raila odinga. “i consider that to be propaganda, which i choose not to comment on,” she said. Mr odinga had been invited to attend the meeting but withdrew last week in what his spokesman salim lone called schedule difficulties.
