I have followed a link provided by ghetto4nr, and am of the opinion that it did not capture the spirit of your question, or better yet - to my understanding of your question.

Inventions don't happen in a vacuum, so i guess the environment has a lot to do with the 'drive to invent', so far what I have seen is black inventors in, lets say, white environment, which is all good by the way and Kudos to them but there is a marked difference: Western society (as well as the orients and Arabs) through the years enabled development in many things including arts and sciences unlike in Black Africa. of course there is a social explanation to this but thats not the topic

Your question was Black Africans (probably also in Africa), as always we get defensive when a statement seems to attack us, but I see a good discussion based on your question.

Really what Black African inventions IN AFRICA, can we boast about? This is not a 'prove' challenge more an 'enlightenment' challenge, so far I have nothing in mind, even the irrigations systems are from the middle east.

So lets name those inventions, instead of citing the blackman in a whitemans world, it might be his invention but has a lot of influence from the environment, maybe we shall find out what it is about 'our environment' that has kept us behind!!

They say “Necessity is the mother of invention.” We didn’t ‘need’ a train or a ship to travel. But we needed canoes to cross rivers. For these, we didn’t wait for m’ngoso to come and invent. The same applies to all other native peoples e.g. American Indians, Chinese etc. And BTW, what has a Chinese ever invented? Yet they are the biggest threat there is.

Just like their Japanese and Korean cousins, the Chinese have proved that invention is not everything. You can let others invent and then perfect, adapt, commercialize and completely take over their invention. And India is joining that league. Look, western companies no longer manufacture TVs, Radios, phones, washing machines, fridges, clothing, cookers…, the list is endless. Automobiles are also on their way out. We should probably focus more on this ‘takeover’ than on raw invention.

Why invent stuff you don't need? that is the question?
with the challenges of modern life, you are going to see many inventions from Africans, but expecting one to invent an air conditioner in an equatorial region, or an automobile in an sparsely populated heavily forested region like most of Africa was is pure idiocy.

Many pre-colinial African languages had written scripts e.g the Bamum script of Cameroun, Nubian script, Ethiopian etc. even Arabic can be classified as an African languge. much of Yemen and Arabia was ruled from Ethiopia in the years BC. of course don't forget to mention that the Ancient Egyptians were a black people. paintings of the pharaohs prove this.
