We are always going in circles because we design our institutions to suit the existing crop of ‘leaders’. It should be the other way round. In the 1990s, people died for the Opposition. Those who reaped from those sacrifices are now in power and, true to human nature, will do everything for themselves not to be opposed. These are the foundations of dictatorship – back to the 1990s! If we allow this to stand, we will soon be back in the streets fighting the reincarnation of a ‘single-party’ dictatorship.
It is NOT up to the government to authorize opposition (Orengo understands this very well). Would any sane politician nurture an opponent? Just as government is supposed to be for the people, the Opposition also belongs to the people and not to the government. It serves our interests and not those of the government. The government can only demonize them, but must not have a say in their existence. The people of Kenya need a functioning opposition.
