Default Mungiki – Should the government negotiate? - 04-27-2008, 10:37 AM

This Mungiki thing has been festering for years now. The government seems to be admitting that it cannot eliminate Mungiki via the gun. Some senior-level politicians are suspected to be working with the organization.

Some Mashadites like Sophie_Neveu have even suggested that we cede Murang’a to Mungiki. It appears to me that Murang’a and Maragua are already lost to the group. I am certain the group has much higher objectives than these two. Dismissing it as a ‘Lesotho’ problem is burying the head in the sand.

Should the government negotiate with Mungiki? Does this not imply recognition? And what will stop Taliban, Baghdad Boys and Kamjesh, among others, from seeking similar recognition? Are we not creating our own Hamas and Hezbollahs?

What do you think?

Government seems to act on the effect of Mungiki not the cause. Kalenjins hostility was the basis of Mungiki creation. The society as a whole has ignored this factor thus the flourishing of Mungiki. Now the organization has metamorphosed to exhibit mafia like characteristics. Just merely killing the foot soldier wont affect or eliminate Mungiki. Government has to negotiate...Period.

I agree with you, Diambo

Negotiating with criminals is out of the question. They'll hold the whole country at ransom.

I'm no rastafarian but Bob Marley had a point there.
