Default PEACE TOP-BOTTOM: Can it work? - 04-27-2008, 04:15 AM

My knowledge on peace-(re)building is pedestrian and at best shared with fellow elders playing bao in some dirty busaa shebeen in Kawangware. Call me a sceptic but am a Kenyan pained and hoping Kenya shall rise once again to join the rest of the peaceful brotherhood of nations.
It is a good show of peace for the two principals to dance peace songs in public rallies but go down to Kibera or Mathare and any IDP camp and you realise that the calm is artificial and like waiting for a spark to ignite all over again.
This is where the peace-(re)building should start. By facilitating groups of elders, youth groups women groups. In churches, mosque, and busaa-drinking dens.

There is no peace witjhout justice. As long as we still haave Kibaki the drunkard loording over us know that there will be no peace in Kenya

Well, it is amazing how so generously to respond to no sense threads. But your penchant for trivialising my argument just goes to show your depth (rather lack thereof) of matters that excite more intellectual activity than your unfortunate sloganeer hate mongering infatuation with petty politics - makes one wonder whether you are under some restriction to use some parts of your brain.

1. First, please update yourself. I suspected you pasted your post from some unedited internet forward dating back to January.
2. Kibaki is not lording over anyone(I think it is the other way round) - check your dictionary! We have a government - a coalition government by coercion no less- that is representative and by accord ready to discharge their mandate.
3. Kenyans are crying for peace. Any one so disconnected from that spirit can only be an embarrassment to anything Kenyan.

And here was the thrust of my argument: Peacebuilding should be an all-front affair. From the top but more importantly The Common Man.

^^What about justice? Tell me how you can separate peace from justice? I always knew the two are mutually dependent.

Justice - actually, Injustices, can only be addressed within a context. These injustices, real or perceived, historic or present, individual or mass, must be addressed within a legal framework that will identify, frame and quantify the given injustice.
For example, if some angry militiamen burn my kiosk because of some election results dispute then my son in anger pursues and kills one. Now the police come for my son. Each of us will talk of justice but mean different and actually contradicting things.

So when the election dispute goes does that mean my kiosk deserved to be burnt; that my son was justified to kill.

Pardon the digression but hope it drives the point home. The politicians have their justice hence their peace, but justice has yet to trickle down to the Common Man. And so has peace.

No wonder when the principals talk peace our retort is IT IS THEIR PEACE they got what they wanted.
Unless they come down and facilitate peace - as you say thru justice - down here.
