Default Kenyans we literally thinks backwards... - 04-12-2008, 04:00 PM

I do not mean to offend anyone with this statement, but it is true for us and most other African countries. Why do we think as a tribe first then, ethinicity (bantu, Nilote etc) and then as a Kenyan. If you really think about it we should think about ourselves in the total opposite way; Kenyan first, ethnicity second and tribe last of all.
I was sitting down and thinking what it is that I really despise about Kikuyus, but it is something that I am guilty of as well. They are so pro-kikuyu as if somebody ever questioned their tribe (It is like those Americans flying their flags on their porches and cars IN THE U.S.). I am luhya first before anything else and it will take a generation or two to pluck this retrogressive attitude that I have.
Unless we start thinking as a nation first we are doomed to keep fighting each other and voting along these tribal lines. How can we get to a point where our internal squabbles become international news? Our former colonial masters would have a field day if they were allowed to re-conquer us.

I now understand your self confessed 'retrogressive attitude'.

When one has nothing in common with the socio-political leadership, it is useless to try to relate to it. This explains why Kenyans identify with tribe first and nation last. In 2003 we were promised a rainbow government where every tribe will be represented in the running of the government. It did not take more than 4 months to relaise that we were hoodwinked. These are the things that make one not want to identify with the nation state of Kenya. When others are treated as lesser human beings, there is bound to be a detachment from the nation.

@Chips, true, as much as we talk ill and evil of our country, we still remain Kenyans!

I realise that patriotism is not enough. I must have no hatred or bitterness towards anyone.

I RESPECT your candor. Not a lot of people are willing to seek solutions from the inside out. You are on your way to greatness.

No one cursed us. we are just too backward thinking to help ourselves. anyone who attempts to succeed in kenya, we shoot them down quick and we will never let anyone succeed where we cant ourselves.

Dude, if half the participants in this forum were as candidly honest and open as you've been in this post, we would'nt be verbally tearing each other apart as is our custom, for starters.

I hear you, Sir Ghetto. Perhaps this should be a rallying call for all those looking for a way out of the messy quaqmire we've navigated ourselves into.
