according to the oldest webster dictionary, a tribe is a group of plants or animals in a swampy area. in terms of people, a tribe is a primitive sub-species of human race.

I tend to concur with you on replacing the TRIBE with a more "politically correct" term. In a place like India, they have the larger and more recognised groupings which are more or less considered national whereas the low castes and the so thought to be "back ward" communities are referred to Dalits (low caste) and the Tribals/Adivasis (small tribes).
