Default My mum wants to go to University    Show Printable Version  Print   Email this Page  Email

My mother who is a Primary school teacher and has been headmistress in a number of schools has lately been asking for my advice on whether or not to go to the University to get a Bachelor's degree in Education.

She had only 3 years left to reach 55 but since the government raised the retirement age for teachers to 60, she now has 7 years to go. She wants to go to a 4 year college then get her degree then teach in a secondary school for 3 years. Her ultimate plan though is to set up her own School either primary or secondary.

It is difficult for me to advise her, because children never give advice to their parents where I come from. I am confused. What should I tell her. Is it worthwhile for her to spend over 400,000 shillings to get this degree which she shall only use actively for 3 years or should she just keep that money and invest it in something else. Consider too that my parents are not exactly rich and 400,000 shillings is a lot of money which could come in handy for many other things.

Not worth it, esp if she is going to do a bachelors degree in Education. If she wants to run her own school, (hope not as headmistress!!) she has already learnt enough on the job, perhaps another shorter college degree but not Education.

A few clarifications - You mum has educated you and your siblings if you have any. Her drive may be one of self actualization / accomplishment. If its her sream and she's ready to struggle without outside help, dont stop her, but put it clearly, that she should not use the reason for a private school as an excuse.

Am almost sure she would complete in 2yrs (calendar) in KU coz she has experience, probably some units would be dropped and her field experience would probably be scraped and she would do that concurrently.

A school can be run by an administrator who does not necessarily have to have educational background. But she can also be employed in a private instituition until even 75.

Urge her on, also keeps her brain occupied, and you want that for her, the money stress will keep her lively, you just need to see how retirees age 30 years after 2 years of retirement.

Thanks Sanaa. That's exactly what I thought but I just don't know how to put it across.

I wish she had never asked me such a question. Parents should never ask their children for advice. Worst part is I'm not even the first-born. Got two da-mn older brothers just whiling away abroad and I get all these responsibilities just because I'm the one in Kenya.

Even that starting a school might not be the best idea. retirement should be a time for rest, bonding with your spouse, rediscovering one's soul, going on exotic trips etc, not hustling and doing such businesses.

That's another way to look at it. True, She and my dad educated all of my siblings to university level. I agree too that the quest may be more one for self actualisation than acquiring new skills for business, just the pride that she has a degree to her name even if she does nothing with it.

I don't know if KU will let her drop some units. Those fellas are so greedy and will want her to pay for all the units. That's a point worth investigating though. If they could let her finish the degree in two years it would help.

To be honest though, this is a position I'd rather not be in. I've always looked up to my parents as very stable people, not people needing advice from of all people me.

I was in KU, i was the undisputed chairman of K.U.M.A for three years, way back when we linked an opening from KU to KM. The routes that u guys take to Km from nyayo were my ideas...when George wanted that route to be fenced to keep ladies safe, so u need to appreciate how i helped u guys get the cheap 1.5 during lunch time. Besides i founded K.UMA ...Kenyatta univeristy morners association for both studis and modijos.

Besides, this dude should learn to keep his family agendas out of mashada. i just wanted him to realize that b4 aropokwe too much.

Kill P, ambia mum atulize, hakuna haja ya bachelors degree just for prestige, its time for her to rest and let you guys hussle for her and dad. However, she has amassed enough wealth of experience to start a school and that doesnt necessary mean she has to have a degree.
Dont worry about her asking you for advice as her son,it shows she respects you alot to even ask you for some input ..hizo 400.000 Ksh should help her start the School Project...my 2 cents:
