Default Degree From Abroad Better Than A Kenyan One? - 12-11-2007, 09:17 AM

Is it true that people with degrees from abroad are given priority when it comes to jobs in Kenya? And why is that? Is that not unfair? Are student from abroad actually more knowledgable?
Sorry to ask 21 questions but im confused. Most of my education has been outside Kenya and i havent yet tried to get a Job in Kenya.
People keep saying that your better off with a degree from countries like U.K & U.S when it comes to securing jobs in Kenya. However, i cant help but notice how knowledgeable generally Kenyans are. Even speaking to graduates there n here in England, you can see the difference. So if im not wrong by saying Kenyans are generally quite intelligent, why do employers in kenya give priority to candidates with foreign degrees?
I kno it will work in my favour if i should go back home to look for a job, but i cant help but think about the thousands of graduates, who mite be better for the job, but have missed the short list, because one or two of the applicants have qualifications from the west.

depends on what u studying hun.

A degree of law from Nairobi still ranks higher than a degree of arts in a community college.

Also depends where. Take india for instance. University of Delhi: highly respected. Maradhwada... well... not so much. Also lots of Kenyans can discern between Ivy league, state uni and community college stuff.

I have heard that there is preference by employers for those educated abroad but I think that is wrong. Degrees should be accessed by case basis only. The fact is that attending a stellar institution without any accompanying accomplishment is not enough, at least for me. You will agree with me that it is not impossible for a student from Moi University to be better than a Harvard grad. I think a curriculum vitae is a better indicator. However, if all other factors are equal, I think most employers will go for the Harvard grad.
I do think however that a good student can benefit from education abroad. First of all, you are exposed to different cultures and practices and hopefully you can pick up the positives. Secondly, many higher education destinations in Europe, North America and Australia have endless opportunities for students. Students in top universities in these countries are able to rub shoulders with great professors, utilize state of the art learning facilities/resources, acquire top-notch internships etc. Issues such as books, internet access, library access, learning space, teacher student ratios, even accommodation are not a problem at great schools. Therefore, a good student who knows how to take advantage of these resources can benefit so much more in this environment.

Thanks people for the info. Its starting to make sense now especially if employers in kenya know which are good unis out there other than the obvious oxfords and harvards. I do agree that top unis like harvard have better facilities therefore as a student you are more likely to flourish academically.
