Default Gloria Naylor: The Women of Brewster Place - 07-19-2004, 03:18 PM

I just finished reading The Women of Brewster Place, and I think Gloria Naylor is a fantastic writer. Anybody read any of her novels? I'm almost tempted to say she's better than Toni Morrison, which, is a literal impossiblity, but she's that good.

I have read Men of Brewster Place. Basil, the cinnamon looking guy reappears. He had some drama which i think lead to his death. Both books are fast paced. I like the way all the characters are linked pamoja.

Haven't read The Men of Brewster Place, (Though i've a copy chilling!), I'm now on Mama Day (the 3rd one), which comes after Linden Hills. They are sort of related and I'm reading them in that order. @ Jib, we'll discuss it once I finish it, hey?

@ Biwotmoi. The Women of Brewster place is a collection of 'sketches' which give us glimpses into six (?) women's lives. These women all live in Brewster place, but they've had varying experiences with love, marriage, parenting, religion, family sex, homoeroticism, etc. The novel narrates each character's experiences; their joys, their pains, their humiliation, etc. It's really great. And damn moving! I read it it one seating- Naylor is great with the banal details of everyday life, of feeling, loving, hatred, pain, and group psychology. You SOOOO need to read it!

Ya. That was painful... and she tells it with such detail, its depressing! Worse than Toni Morrison, when she describes the way in which beloved's mother accepted to have is it five minutes of sex with a stonemason, so he could curve the word 'loved' on her daughter's gravestone, and she lived cursing herself for not extending by two minutes, so she could have her full name 'beloved' curved... real spooky!!
